In today's House Appropriations Committee hearing, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky lied directly to Congress, repeating her longstanding dishonesty about her role in spreading vaccine misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this hearing, Representative Andrew Clyde (R-GA) asked Walensky: "Dr. Walensky, in March 2021 on MSNBC, you stated that: 'Vaccinated people do not carry the virus. They don't get sick.' Do you remember making that statement? Was that statement correct?" Walensky responds by deflecting, avoiding addressing the actual question about carrying the virus, instead talking about transmission. But it turns out that, at the very time that Walensky was making these claims on March 29, 2021, both the "do not carry the virus", as well as her deflection about "transmission" was not true, according to the science AT THAT TIME. Let's debunk both claims. A few facts that few people know about the CDC study Walensky cited to make the first claim: 1. This study was conducted in relatively newly vaccinated individuals, for whom we know that viral load is much lower for infection; 2. Samples to test infection were nasal swabs shipped in the mail which have low sensitivity to detect infection; 3. These two facts may have thus predisposed to creating false negatives in a test already prone to false negatives, creating bias in favor of showing that vaccinated people were not "infected" even when they were; 4. Those experiencing symptoms were to give additional saliva samples, which have a higher sensitivity; 5. Since people who are vaccinated are less likely to experience symptoms, this means that far fewer high-sensitivity saliva samples were submitted by vaccinated vs. unvaccinated study participants, creating still more bias in favor of detecting "infection" in unvaccinated participants; 6. This study was only an interim analysis, as clearly indicated in the title on the CDC website. In fact, the study was supposed to be conducted for at least 6 months, but no further study results were reported after the interim analysis. All in all, it was a flawed study that was designed with a bias in favor of the vaccine. Its full preplanned results and analyses were not ultimately reported, casting a question over the study as to whether its reporting was selective. Furthermore, its results haven't been borne out over the longer term due to these flaws and due to the fact that protection against infection is now known to completely fade by 3-4 months. Walensky reported reading the report that very day. How much time did she spend critically analyzing the report before sharing its findings on MSNBC? It sounds like not a lot. A disciplined scientist and public health official would be very cautious in communicating such findings publicly before a careful reading of the paper. In contrast, Walensky greatly exaggerated the paper's findings, claiming that nobody got infected after vaccination. A New York Times article published just a few days later on April 1st, moreover, featured a quotation from a spokesman from the CDC that directly contradicted Walensky's claim. This contradiction clearly shows that Walensky was not communicating the evidence as it was known by scientists at that time, and instead pushing a narrative that concealed the true state of uncertainty in the science at the time. The spokesman told the Times: "Dr. Walensky spoke broadly during this interview. It’s possible that some people who are fully vaccinated could get Covid-19. The evidence isn’t clear whether they can spread the virus to others. We are continuing to evaluate the evidence." The Times also interviewed other scientists to get their takes. Here's what they said. "It’s much harder for vaccinated people to get infected, but don’t think for one second that they cannot get infected. Clearly, some vaccinated people do get infected. We’re stopping symptoms, we’re keeping people out of hospitals. But we’re not making them completely resistant to an infection." - Paul Duprex, director of the Center for Vaccine Research at the University of Pittsburgh "If Dr. Walensky had said most vaccinated people do not carry virus, we would not be having this discussion. What we know is the vaccines are very substantially effective against infection — there’s more and more data on that — but nothing is 100 percent. It is an important public health message that needs to be gotten right." - John Moore, a virologist at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York "There cannot be any daylight between what the research shows — really impressive but incomplete protection — and how it is described. This opens the door to the skeptics who think the government is sugarcoating the science and completely undermines any remaining argument why people should keep wearing masks after being vaccinated." - Dr. Peter Bach, director of the Center for Health Policy and Outcomes at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York What these quotes show, from CDC, University of Pittsburgh, Cornell University, and Memorial Sloan Kettering, is that Walensky was lying about both infection and transmission, not in hindsight, but according to the science AT THE TIME. Walensky's tendency to uncritically exaggerate low-quality research findings reflects one of two things: 1) an excess of emotional identification with a particular desired outcome and a lack of scientific discipline or reserve; 2) a willingness to distort research findings far beyond what they actually say, in order to drive a narrative. Walensky failed as an official trusted to honestly and accurately report scientific findings and their limitations. This failure resulted in a large number of reversals of her positions, reversals that could have been avoided if she had stated her positions with more reserve and caution rather than with her characteristic extravagance. Walensky's behavior is completely unbecoming of a leader of the public health community and led to its loss of credibility among large swathes of the public. Her refusal to square with the misinformation that she spread, continuing to keep lying about it, brings shame to the scientific and public health communities in the United States and perpetuates Walensky's campaign of mistrust. Walensky should resign and never serve in such a position as CDC Director ever again. Feldstein a 2017 graduate of the Epidemic Intelligence Service i.e. an EIS Officer, think Kate Winslet from Contagion but not really. She now works at the CDC as an Epidemiologist in the Division of Viral Diseases, Respiratory Viruses Branch. She declared no COI’s, in fact I can’t find her ever declaring a COI in all the articles she has co-authored in her career. She explained that this isn’t about loyalty pledges. It’s about results and a shared vision, in this case to make America healthy again. She was ready and waiting for this. “What I will tell you is the FDA recently revoked the emergency youth authorizations for three Covid vaccinations, while simultaneously green lighting four new Covid-19 vaccines with 2025 and 2026 formulas.” Then she dismantled the entire media narrative in one sweep. “The reason for the revocation of that emergency youth authorization is because the Covid pandemic and the public health emergency is over but to correct the record because there has been a lot of misinformation on this, the FDA’s decision does not affect the availability of Covid vaccines for Americans who want them.” “We believe in individual choice. But Wright wasn’t done making herself look foolish. As Leavitt tried to move on, Wright pushed forward with one last attack on MAHA…this one completely detached from reality. “Sorry, I wondered if you could ask—I wonder if you could answer why the president hasn’t acknowledged the shooting at CDC headquarters that took place earlier in August, where a police officer was killed and it was reported that the motivation for the shooting was somebody who was really unhappy with the effects of the Covid vaccine.” Wright was using anything she had to try to fire at Trump and Secretary Kennedy, obviously upset about Monarez. Leavitt didn’t miss a beat, she pointed Wirght directly to the proof. “We absolutely were very much aware of that shooting.” “The Secretary of Health and Human Services put out a statement immediately.” Then Leavitt threw an undeniable final haymaker: “He was in touch with the CDC and he actually traveled to Georgia to assess the situation and to mourn with the people who work in that building there. So…..” [Silence] Wright had no bullets left in the chamber. Leavitt had successfully repelled another media onslaught, this time their target was the MAHA agenda and all that it stands for.
