Speaker 0: So as we told you, we sat down yesterday with Russell Brand, the comedian, actor, and now, frankly, kind of a public intellectual for about an hour and a half on our show Tucker Carlson today. We wanna share more of it tonight. In particular, Brian spent a lot of time thinking about and telling us about the COVID lockdowns. And the point of them was maybe the clearest explanation we have heard of what we've just lived through. Here it is.
Speaker 1: I think COVID provided a lens through which we could scrutinize the machinery of power and how the intentions and agenda of power are able to play out coalesce and let's call it conspire when a crisis occurs. How a tendency a globalist tendency to increase surveillance, a big tech appetite to capture data, and a comparable appetite within government converges. The great American comedian George Carlin used to say there is no need for conspiracy where interest converge. It seems that even if at its advent, it was a legitimate crisis and I certainly won't make any contention around that. It was opportunistically handled in order to enhance regulation and control, a time where regulation and control are increasingly difficult to implement as people are more suspicious of institutional power.
So in a sense, the best way to understand COVID, I believe, is to take COVID out of it and look at how the institutions both corporate and government behaved around it. How did they benefit? How did they utilize it? What narratives did they, disseminate and which narratives did they text messages from our health minister at that time, Matt Hancock, you can explicitly see it was exploited. Oh, no.
We need to scare people. Is there any way high net worth individuals can get to the country? All these conversations that many people that are cynical about the behavior of the powerful believed were happening were indeed happening. The way that natural immunity was discussed proved to be true, I e that natural immunity is effective. They probably understood earlier than they admitted that natural immunity was effective and for reasons that well, what what could it be?
What could be the reason that a monetizable solution to COVID was prioritized over a non monetizable? Is there anyone involved in the situation that has a profit motive? Let's look at the data. And, like, you know, so what it it was just revelatory like the apocalypse always will be. The apocalypse is revelation of all what was always there, corruption, convergence of interests, alliances.
This is not conspiratorial. This is the moot recital of economic interests and the ordinary movements of the powerful. If people can, honor one another and talk to one another in good faith and recognize that anybody is there, like, there's the whole debate between like that I've that I've sort of felt a little bit around me even for coming here. I feel like it used to just be normal that someone in your family would be a conservative and someone in your family would be liberal and someone in your family would be socialist and someone in your family would be trans and someone in your family would be gay and different races are coming together. Is this part of who we are?
And if it isn't a part of who we are, it's certainly part of who we need to become. And it's something that we need to deeply, deeply encourage, immediately in the moment now. And you

Speaker 1: It's the only option and therefore it cannot be discussed, it must be implemented. Because the alternative we can see from the tendency towards geopolitical disaster, a set of centralized interests who seem to unconsciously be directing us towards nuclear Armageddon, if not with Russia then with China. They have to be interrupted. It simply has to it simply has happened. There is no choice.
And in a situation where there's no choice, human ingenuity and our collegiate spirit must take over. We have no option but to find it in ourselves, to forgive one another, to move forwards, to love one another. Values that may seem a little hokey and old fashioned because they pertain to things that are ineffable and difficult to describe, but are vital and that we all understand.

Speaker 0: Good afternoon. Thank you very much.
Speaker 1: Today, I'm here to tell you that the western world is in danger. And it is endangered because those who are supposed to have to defend the values of the West are co opted by a vision of the world that inevitably leads to socialism and thereby to poverty. Unfortunately, in recent decades motivated by some well meaning individuals willing to help others and others motivated by the wish to belong to a privileged cause. The main leaders of the Western world have abandoned the model of freedom for different versions of what we call collectivism. We're here to tell you that collectivist experiments are never the solution to the problems that afflict the citizens of the world rather they are the root cause.
Do believe me, no one better place than us, Argentines, to testify to these two points. When we adopted the model of freedom back in 18/60, in 35 years we became a leaning world power and when we embrace collectivism over the course of the last 100 years, we saw how our citizens started to become systematically impoverished and we dropped to spot number 140 globally. But before having the discussion, it would first be important for us to take a look at the data that demonstrate why free enterprise capitalism is not just the only possible system to end world poverty but also that it's the only morally desirable system to achieve this. If we look at the history of economic progress, we can see how between the year 0 and the year 1800 approximately, world per capita GDP practically remained constant throughout the whole reference period. If you look at a graph of the evolution of economic growth throughout the history of humanity, you would see a hockey stick graph, an exponential function that remained constant for 90% of the time and which was exponentially triggered starting in the 19th century.
The only exception to this history of stagnation was in the late 15th century with the discovery of the American continent but for this exception throughout the whole period between the year 0 and the year 18 100, global per capita GDP stagnated. Now it's not just that capitalism brought about an explosion in wealth from the moment it was adopted as an economic system but also if you look at the data, what you will see is that growth continues to accelerate throughout the whole period and throughout the whole period between the year 0 and the year 1800, the per capita GDP growth rate remains stable at around 0.02% annually. So almost no growth. Starting in the 19th century with the Industrial Revolution, the compound annual growth rate was 0.66% and at that rate in order to double per capita GDP, you would need some 107 years. Now if you look at the period between the year 1900 and the year 1950, the growth rate accelerated to 1.66 percent a year.
So you no longer need 107 years to double per capita GDP, but 66%. And if you take the period between 1950 and the year 2000, you will see that the growth rate was 2.1%. Again, the CAGR which would mean then in only 33 years we could double the world's per capita GDP. This trend far from stopping remains well alive today. If we take the period between the year 2023, the growth rate again accelerated to 3% a year which means that we could double world per capita GDP in just 23 years.
That said, when you look at per capita GDP since the year 1800 and until today, what you will see is that after the industrial revolution, global per capita GDP multiplied by over 15 times, which meant a boom in growth that lifted 90% of the global population out of poverty. We should remember that by the year 1800, about 95% of the world's population lived in extreme poverty and that figure dropped to 5% by the year 2020 prior to the pandemic. The conclusion is obvious far from being the cause of our problems. Free trade capitalism as an economic system is the only instrument we have to end hunger, poverty, and extreme poverty across our planet. The empirical evidence is unquestionable.
Therefore, since there is no doubt that free enterprise capitalism is superior in productive terms. The left wing doxa has attacked capitalism alleging matters of morality saying, that's what the detractors claim, that it's unjust. They say that capitalism is evil because it's individualistic and that world. But this concept which in the developed world became fashionable in recent times in my country has been a constant in political discourse for over 80 years. The problem is that social justice is not just and it doesn't contribute either to the general well-being.
Quite on the contrary, it's an intrinsically unfair idea because it's violent. It's unjust because the state is fine as to a tax and taxes are collected coercively or can any one of us say that they voluntarily pay taxes which means that the state is financed through coercion and that the higher the tax burden, the higher the coercion and the lower the freedom. Those who promote social justice, the advocates start with the idea that the whole economy is a pie that can be shared differently but that pie is not a given. It's wealth that is generated in what Israel for instance calls a market discovery process. If the goods or services offered by a business are not wanted, the business will fail unless it adapts to what the market is demanding.
If they make a good quality product at an attractive price, they will do well and produce more. So the market is a discovery process in which the capitalists will find the right path as they move forward but if the state punishes capitalists when they're successful and gets in the way of the discovery process, they will destroy their incentives and the consequences that they will produce less, the pie will be smaller and this will harm society as a whole. Collectivism by inhibiting these discovery processes and hindering the appropriation of discoveries ends up binding the hands of entrepreneurs and prevents them from offering better goods and services at a better price. So how come that, academia, international organizations, economic theory, and politics demonize an economic system that has not only lifted out of extreme poverty 90% of the world's population but has continued to do this faster and faster and this is morally superior and just. Thanks to free trade capitalism, it is, to be seen that the world is now living its best moment.
Never in all of mankind's or humanity's history has there been a time of more prosperity than today. This is true for all. The world of today has more freedom, is rich, is more peaceful and prosperous. And this is particularly true for countries that have more freedom and have economic freedom and respect the, property rights of individuals because countries that have more freedom are 12 times richer than those that are repressed and the lowest decile in terms of distribution of free countries are better off than 90% of population of repressed countries and poverty is 25 times lower and, extreme poverty is 50 times lower. And citizens in free countries live 25% longer than citizens in repressed countries.
Now what is it that we mean when we talk about libertarianism? And let me quote the words of the greatest authority on freedom in Argentina, professor Alberto Banagas Lej junior who says that libertarianism is the unrestricted respect for the life project of others based on the principle of non aggression in defense of the right to life, liberty and property. Its fundamental institutions being private property, markets free from state intervention, free competition, the division of labor and social cooperation as by which success is achieved only by serving others with goods of better quality or at a better price. In other words, capitalists, successful business people are social benefactors who far from appropriating the wealth of others contribute to the general well-being. Ultimately, a successful entrepreneur is a hero.
And this is the model that we are advocating for the Argentina of the future, a model based on the fundamental principles of libertarianism, the defense of life, of freedom and of property. Now if free enterprise capitalism and economic freedom have proven to be extraordinary instruments to end poverty in the world and we are now at the best time in the history of humanity, it is worth asking why I say that the west is endangered. And I say this precisely because in those of our countries that should defend the values of the free market, private property and the other institutions of libertarianism, sectors of the political and economic establishment, some due to mistakes in their theoretical framework and others due to a greed for power are undermining the foundations of libertarianism, opening up the doors to socialism and potentially condemning us to poverty, misery, and stagnation. It should never be forgotten that socialism is always and everywhere an impoverishing phenomenon that has failed in all countries where it's been tried out. It's been a failure economically, socially, culturally, and it also murdered over a 100,000,000 human beings.
The essential problem that was today is not just that we need to come to grips with those who even after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the overwhelming empirical evidence continue to advocate for impoverishing socialism, but there's also old leaders, thinkers, and academics who are relying on a misguided theoretical framework, undermine the fundamentals of the system that has given us the greatest expansion of wealth and prosperity in our history. The theoretical framework to which I refer is that of neo classical economic theory, which designs a set of instruments that unwillingly or without meaning to ends up, serving the intervention by the state socialism and social degradation. The problem with neoclassicals is that the model they fell in love with does not map reality. So they put down their mistakes to supposed market failures rather than reviewing the premises or the model. On the pretext of a supposed market failure, regulations are introduced which only create distortions in the price system, prevent economic calculus and therefore also prevent saving investment and growth.
This problem lies mainly in the fact that not even supposedly libertarian economists understand what the market is because if they did understand, it would quickly be seen that it's impossible for there to be something along the lines of market failures. The market is not a mere graph describing a curve of supply and demand. The market is a mechanism of social cooperation where you voluntarily exchange ownership rights. Therefore, based on this definition, talking about a market failure is an oxymoron. There are no market failures.
If transactions are voluntary, the only context in which there can be a market failure is if there is coercion and the only one that is able to coerce generally is the state which holds a monopoly on violence. Consequently, if someone considers that there is a market failure, I would suggest that they check to see if the state intervention involved and if they find that that's not the case, I would suggest that they check again because obviously there's a mistake. Market failures do not exist. An example of these so called market failures described by the neoclassicals are the concentrated structures of the economy. However, without increasing returns to scale functions whose counterpart are the concentrated structures of the economy, we couldn't possibly explain economic growth since the year 1800 until today.
Isn't this interesting? Since the year 1800 onwards with population multiplying by 8 or 9 times per capita GDP grew by over 15 times. So there are growing returns which took extreme poverty from 95% to 5%. However, the presence of growing returns involves concentrated structures, what we would call a monopoly. How come then that's something that has generated so much well-being for the neoclassical theory is a market failure.
Neoclassical economists think outside of the box. When the model fails, you shouldn't get angry with reality but rather with a model and change it. The dilemma faced by the neoclassical model is that they say they wish to perfect the functioning of the market by attacking what they consider to be failures but in so doing they don't just open up the doors to socialism but also go against economic growth. An example, regulating monopolies, destroying their profits and destroying growing returns automatically would destroy economic growth. In other words, whatever you want to correct a supposed market failure inevitably as a result of not knowing what the economy.

I know to many it may sound ridiculous to suggest that the west has turned to socialism but it's only ridiculous if you only limit yourself to the traditional economic definition of socialism which says that it's an economic system where the state owns the means of production. This definition in my view should be updated in the light of current circumstances.
Today, states don't need to directly control the means of production to control every aspect of the lives of individuals With tools such as printing money, debt, subsidies, controlling the interest rate, price controls and regulations to correct the so called market failures, they can control the lives and fates of millions of individuals. This is how we come to the point where by using different names or guises, a good deal of the generally accepted political offers in most Western countries are collectivist variants, whether they proclaim to be openly, communist, fascist, Nazis, socialist, social democrats, national socialist, democrat Christians, Christian democrats, neo Keynesians, progressive populist nationalists or globalists. At bottom, there are no major differences. They all say that the state should steer all aspects of the lives of individuals. They all defend a model contrary to that one which led humanity to the most spectacular progress in its history.
We have come here today to invite the rest of the countries in the western world to get back on the path of prosperity, economic freedom, limited government, and, unlimited respect for private property are essential elements, for economic growth. And the impoverishment produced by collectivism is no fantasy nor is it an inescapable fate but it's a reality that we Argentines know very well. We have lived through this. We have been through this because as I said earlier, ever since we decided to abandon the model of freedom that had made us rich, we have been caught up in a downward spiral as part of which we are poorer and poorer day by day. So this is something we have lived through and we are here to warn you about what can happen if the countries in the western world that became rich through the model of freedom stay on this path of servitude.
The case of Argentina is an empirical demonstration that no matter how rich you may be or how much you may have in terms of natural resources or how skilled your population may be or educated or how many bars of gold you may have in the central bank, if measures are adopted that hinder the free function of markets, free competition, free price systems, if you hinder trade, if you attack private property, the only possible fate is poverty. Therefore, in concluding, I would like to leave a message for all business people here and for those who are not here in person but are following from around the world. Do not be intimidated intimidated either by the political cast or by parasites who live off the state. Speaker 0: Well, thank you very much, Klaus, and hello to everyone in beautiful Davos. This has been a truly historic week in the United States. 3 days ago, I took the oath of office, and we began the golden age of America. The recent presidential was won by millions of votes and all 7, every one of them, all 7 swing states. It was a massive mandate from the American people like hasn't been seen in many years.
And some of the political pundits, even some of my so called enemies, said it was the most consequential election victory in a 129 years. That's quite nice. What the world has witnessed for the past 72 hours is nothing less than a revolution of common sense. Our country will soon be stronger, wealthier, and more united than ever before, and the entire planet will be more peaceful and prosperous as a result of this incredible momentum and what we're doing and going to do. My administration is acting with unprecedented speed to fix the disasters we've inherited from a totally inept group of people and to solve every single crisis facing our country.
This begins with confronting the economic chaos caused by the failed policies of the last administration. Over the past 4 years, our government racked up $8,000,000,000,000 in wasteful deficit spending and inflicted nation wrecking energy restrictions, crippling regulations, and hidden taxes like never before. The result is the worst inflation crisis in modern history and sky high interest rates for our citizens and even throughout the world. Food prices and the price of almost every other thing known to mankind went through the roof. President Biden totally lost control of what was going on in our country, but in particular with our high inflation economy and at our border.
Because of these ruinous policies, total government spending this year is $1,500,000,000,000 higher than was projected to occur when I left office just 4 years ago. Likewise, the cost of servicing the debt is more than 230% higher than was projected in 2020. The inflation rate we are inheriting remains 50% higher than the historic target. It was the highest inflation probably in the history of our country. That's why from the moment I took office, I've taken rapid action to reverse each and every one of these radical left policies that created this calamity, in particular with immigration, crime, and inflation.
On day 1, I signed an executive order directing every member of my cabinet to marshal all powers at their disposal to defeat inflation and reduce the cost of daily life. I imposed a federal hiring freeze, a federal regulation freeze, a foreign aid freeze, and I created the new Department of Government Efficiency. I terminated the ridiculous and incredibly wasteful Green New Deal. I call it the Green New Scam. Withdrew from the one-sided Paris climate accord and ended the insane and costly electric vehicle mandate.
We're gonna let people buy the car they wanna buy. I declared a a national energy emergency, and it's so important. National energy emergency to unlock the liquid gold under our feet and pave the way for rapid approvals of new energy infrastructure. The United States has the largest amount of oil and gas of any country on Earth, and we're going to use it. Not only will this reduce the cost of virtually all goods and services, it'll make the United States a manufacturing superpower and the world capital of artificial intelligence and crypto.
My administration has also begun the largest deregulation campaign in history, far exceeding even the record setting efforts of my last term. In total, the Biden administration imposed $50,000 in additional regulatory costs on the average American household over the last 4 years. I have promised to eliminate 10 old regulations for every new regulation, which will soon put many 1,000 of dollars back in the pockets of American families. To further unleash our economy, our majorities in the house and senate, which we also took along with the presidency, are going to pass the largest tax cut in American history, including massive tax cuts for workers and family and big tax cuts for domestic producers and manufacturers. And we're working with the Democrats on getting an extension of the original Trump tax cuts as you probably know by just reading any paper.
My message to every business in the world is very simple. Come make your product in America, and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on earth. We're bringing them down very substantially even from the original Trump tax cuts. But if you don't make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply, you will have to pay a tariff, differing amounts, but a tariff which will direct 100 of 1,000,000,000 of dollars and even 1,000,000,000,000 of dollars into our treasury to strengthen our economy and pay down debt. Under the Trump administration, there will be no better place on Earth to create jobs, build factories, or grow a company than right here in the good old USA.
Already, Americans, economic you can see this, I think, maybe even in your in your wonderful, wonderful room that you're all gathered together, so many of my friends. But Americans, the economic confidence is soaring like we haven't seen in many, many decades. Maybe not at all. Upon my election, it was just announced as small business optimism skyrocketed by 41 points in a single month. That's the highest ever.
There's never been anything like that. SoftBank has announced between a $102,100,000,000,000 investment in the US economy because of
Speaker 1: the election result. And just 2 days ago, Oracle, SoftBank, and OpenAI announced a $500,000,000,000 investment in AI infrastructure. Other companies, likewise, have announced 1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000 adding up the trillions of, investment in America
Speaker 0: and the United States. And it's also reported today in the papers that, Saudi Arabia will be investing at least $600,000,000,000 in America, but I'll be asking the crown prince who's a fantastic guy to round it out to around 1,000,000,000,000. I think they'll do that because we've been very good to them. And I'm also going to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down the cost of oil. You gotta bring it down, which frankly, I'm surprised they didn't do before the election.
That didn't show a lot of love by them not doing it. I was a little surprised by that. If the price came down, the Russia Ukraine war would end immediately. Right now, the price is high enough that that war will continue. You gotta bring down the oil price.
You're gonna end that war. They should have done it long ago. They're very responsible, actually, to a certain extent for what's taking place. Millions of lives are being lost. With oil prices going down, I'll demand that interest rates drop immediately.
And, likewise, they should be dropping all over the world. Interest rates should follow us. All over the progress that you're seeing is happening because of our historic victory in a recent presidential election, one that has become quite well known throughout the world. I think a lot of things are happening to a lot of countries. They say that there's light shining all over the world since the election, and even countries that we aren't particularly friendly with, are happy because they understand what there is a future and then how great the future will be under our leadership.
America is back and open for business. And this week, I'm also taking swift action to stop the invasion at our southern border. They allowed people to come in at levels that nobody's ever seen before. It was ridiculous. I decided a and declared to dis to, to do.
And very, very importantly, a national emergency on our border immediately halted all entry of illegal border crossers, of which there were many, and began properly returning the illegal trespassers back to the place from which they came. That action, as you've probably seen, has already started very strongly. I've deployed active duty US military and national guard troops to the border to assist in repelling the invasion. It was really an invasion. We will not allow our territory to be violated.
After 4 long years, the United States is strong and sovereign and a beautiful nation once again. It's a strong sovereign nation. In addition, I'm pleased to report that America is also a free nation once again. On day 1, I signed an executive order to stop all government censorship. No longer will our government label the speech of our own citizens as misinformation or disinformation, which are the favorite words of censors and those who wish to stop the free exchange of ideas and, frankly, progress.
We have saved free speech in America, and we've saved it strongly. With another historic executive order this week, I also ended the weaponization of law enforcement against the American people and, frankly, against politicians and restored the fair, equal, and impartial rule of law. My administration has taken action to abolish all discriminatory diversity, equity, and inclusion nonsense, and these are policies that were absolute nonsense throughout the government and the private sector. With the recent yet somewhat unexpected great supreme court decision just made, America will once again become a merit based country. You have to hear that word, merit based country.
And I've made it official, an official policy of the United States, that there are only 2 genders, male and female. And we will have no men participating in women's sports and transgender operations, which became the rage, will occur very rarely. Finally, as we restore common sense in America, we're moving quickly to bring back strength and peace and stability abroad. I'm also going to ask all NATO nations to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, which is what it should have been years ago. It was only at 2%, and most nations didn't pay until I came along.
I insisted that they pay and they did because the United States was really paying the difference at that time, and it's was unfair to the United States. But many, many things have been unfair for many years to the United States. Before even taking office, my team negotiated a ceasefire agreement in the Middle East, which wouldn't have happened without us, as I think most of the people in the room know. Earlier this week, the hostages began to return to their families. They are returning, and it's a beautiful sight, and they'll be coming in more and more.
They started coming back on Sunday. Our efforts to secure a peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine are now hopefully underway. It's so important to get that done. That is an absolute killing field. Millions of soldiers are being killed.
Nobody's seen anything like it since World War 2. They're laying dead all over the flat fields. It's a flat field farmland, and there's millions of Russians and millions of Ukrainians. Nobody's seen anything like it since World War 2. It's time to end it.
And here in America, we have big events coming up. Next year, we have the 250th anniversary of America's founding. I'm so honored to be president during that. That's been a big event. They've been talking about it for 10 years.
We also have the World Cup. And I understand Gianni. Gianni's in the room. Infantino, he was, very instrumental in helping us get it. He's there with you someplace, I think.
And I wanna thank him for that. And then we have the Olympics coming up, which I was instrumental in getting also in my first term. And who would have known that by skipping a term, I would get the Olympics? I was upset. I said, you know, I got the Olympics to come, and I won't be president, but it turned out through a stroke of luck or whatever you might call it that I'm gonna be president during the World Cup and the Olympics and the 250th anniversary.
So that's gonna be 3 big events. And we've accomplished more in less than 4 days. We have really been working 4 days than other administrations have accomplished in 4 years, and we're just getting started. It's really an amazing thing to see in the spirit and the light over our country has been incredible. Under the last administration, our nation has suffered greatly, But we're going to bring it back and make it greater, bigger, stronger, better than ever before.
I wanna thank everybody for being with you. I would have been there myself except the inauguration was 2 days ago. I thought it might be a little bit quick to make it the first stop. But we'll get there one day. We hope to get there.
But I I do appreciate. I heard the audience is fantastic, and many of my friends are in the audience. And, I will be taking questions now from some very distinguished people. Thank you all very much.

Speaker 3: So we also know, Mr. President, that you open up for interaction here. We have a great panel with some of the most distinguished business people in the world. Let me start, with someone that you know really well that I think is almost a neighbor of you in Malara in in Florida, mister Steve, Schwarzman, chairman, CEO, and cofounder of Blackstone Group. So, Steve, floor is yours.
Speaker 4: Well, mister president, I'm sure the crown prince of Saudi Arabia will be really glad you gave this speech today. You've had the busiest 4 days that anybody can imagine, and congratulations for that. And, my question, is is about some of the things I've observed here at Davos. It's a terrific forum. I've met lots of people, as usual.
I think I've been here 30 years. And a lot of the European business people, have expressed enormous frustration with the regulatory regime in the EU. And they attribute slower growth rates here because of the numerous factors, but especially because of regulations. And you've taken a completely different approach in this area. And if you could explain the theory of what you're doing, how you're gonna do it, and what you expect the outcome to be, I'd appreciate it.
Speaker 0: Well, thank you very much, and congratulations, Steve. You're a friend of mine, but on a great career. You have had an amazing career and continues. I just wanna congratulate you. Very inspirational to a lot of people.
I wanna talk about the EU because you mentioned specifically that I've also had a lot of friends and leaders of countries. I've gotten to know them all my first term and a little bit during this period of 4 years. And know them well, like them a lot, but they're very frustrated because of, the time everything seems to take to get approved, environmental impact statements for things that you shouldn't even have to do that, and many, many other ways that it takes. And I'm gonna give you a quick little example. I in the private life, my beautiful private life, before I had all these things happening, the world is a little different.
I had a nice simple life. You knew that. But, when I had that simple life, I did projects. And I had a big project in Ireland, And it had to get approval on something that would have made it even better. And I got the approval from Ireland in a period of a week, and it was a very, very, very efficient, good approval.
And they informed me, though, the problem is you're gonna have to get it from the EU, and we think that'll take 5 to 6 years. And they said, you have to be kidding. And this was before politics. And I said, wait a minute. It's not that important.
I don't wanna go 5 or 6 years, but it would have been a big investment. It would have been nice, and it would have been good for the project. And I sent the people to the EU to see if they could speed it up, and, basically, it was a 5 or 6 year wait just to get a simple approval that Ireland gave me in a period of literally not much more than a week. And I realized right then, that was the first time I really was involved with the EU, but I realized right then that's a problem. And I didn't even bother applying to do it.
And or if I did, I pulled it very quickly. I don't want I have to be very accurate because I don't wanna be criticized. He did apply, actually. No. I wanna be very accurate.
So, I don't think I did. But if I did, I pulled it very quickly. It was just something you you couldn't wait 5 years or 6 years to get an approval. So a lot of, in a very big business sense, a lot of people are are claiming that's the problem. From the standpoint of America, the, EU treats us very, very unfairly, very badly.
They have a, large tax that we know about and a VAT tax, and it's a very substantial one. They don't take our essentially, don't take our farm products and they don't take our cars, yet they send cars to us by the 1,000,000. They put tariffs on things that we wanna do. Like, for instance, I think they actually, in terms of these are non economic or nonmonetary tariffs, and and those are very bad. And they make it very difficult to bring products into Europe, and yet they expect to be selling.
And they do sell their products in the United States. So we have, you know, 100 of 1,000,000,000 of dollars of deficits with the EU. And nobody's happy with it, and we're gonna do something about it. But nobody's happy with it. So I think the EU has to speed up their process.
Friends of mine that are in, some of the nations within the great people, they they wanna be able to compete better, and you can't compete when you can't get go through the approval process fast. There's no reason why it can't go faster. So, you know, I'm I'm I'm trying to be constructive because I love Europe. I love the countries of Europe, but the process is a very cumbersome one. And the and they do treat the United States of America very, very unfairly with the VAT taxes and all of the other taxes they impose.
One other just to finish up, I got a call from the head of a major airline, one of the biggest airlines in the world. And he said, sir, could you help us what? Landing in Europe is brutal. They charge us fees for everything, and it's so unfair. I said, how does it compare to China?
He said, it's it's much worse. And, the other thing, as you know, they took, court cases with Apple, and they supposedly won a case that most people didn't think was much of a case. They won 15 or 16,000,000,000 from Apple. They won 1,000,000,000 from Google. I think they're after Facebook for 1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000.
These are American companies. Whether you like them or not, they're they're American companies, and they shouldn't be doing that. And, that's as far as I'm concerned, it's a form of taxation. So we have some very big complaints with the EU. Thank you.
Speaker 3: Thank you, very much, mister president. We'll now, go to one of your friends, in the EU, Patrick Poiana. He's the chairman, CEO of Total Energies. I guess you have a question ready, Patrick, for the president.
Speaker 2: Mr. President, as we understand energy is at the top of your agenda and it's an honor for me to present the energy industry tonight. In this panel, TotalEnergies is indeed the 4th largest oil and gas and electricity company in the world. I will not ask you a question about the oil price. It's quite clear what you expect from us.
We will go to gas more. And our company is the largest number one exporter LNG from the U. S. Company. We are a strong contributor to and we invest in a mammoth LNG projects in Texas $20,000,000,000 it's far from $200,000,000,000 but it's $20,000,000,000 And we contribute with that to security of supply to Europe as we export this LNG to Europe.
Some experts are fear that if there are too many projects developed in the U. S. On LNG, this could have an inflationary impact on the U. S. Domestic gas price.
And we recommend a pause on these projects. I would ask you the following question. What are your views on about such a pause on investments on LNG in the U. S? What would happen if you would observe an increased domestic gas price because of these exports?
And final question, which is important for Europe. Would you agree to guarantee security of supplies of US LNG to Europe?
Speaker 0: Well, on the last part of your question, yes, I would. I would make sure that you get it. If we make a deal, we make a deal. You'll get it because a lot of people do have that problem. They make a deal and then it can't get supplied because of, war type problems and other problems.
So we would absolutely do that. LNG is very interesting because when I took office, for the first term, one of the first things I looked at was 2 there were 2 very massive plants in Louisiana, state that has been very good to be, wanted by many, many points. And, I felt strongly indebted to it, actually. And they said there are 2 plants that have been under environmental consideration for more than 10 years. And they were costing, as you say, you know how expensive those plants are, but they were costing, like, 12,000,000,000 and I think 14 or 15,000,000,000, but they couldn't get their permits.
It was they were in review for years, many, many years, like a decade or more. And I said, so ridiculous. I know so much about that because in the construction industry, I had to go through it too, but I got good at it after a while. But I I went I saw the, projects, and you're talking about a total investment of, 25 to $30,000,000,000, and it looked like it was gonna end. They couldn't get their permits.
And I got them done in less than a week. It was done, completed. In fact, when they called them to announce that, it was done, the countries, largely countries, Japan was involved and another country and some very big investors, They couldn't believe it. They actually couldn't believe it. And I said, just do yourself one favor.
Don't pay any consultants because the only one that got it done was me. I got it done because it was the right thing to do for the US and for the world, but the consultants had nothing to do with it. You know? The consultants go in and they say, give us 1,000,000 of dollars because Trump did it. Nobody called me about it.
I just heard it was a problem for years. And I got it done because it was the right thing to do for the US and the right thing to do for Beyond. It had to do with energy. Very important. So I think it's very important.
I I think the the, you know, I disagree with 1. I think the more that you do, the lower the price is gonna go. And what I'd like to see is, rapid approvals. We're gonna give very rapid approvals in the United States. Like with the AI plans, talking to many people who wanna build them.
That's gonna be a very big thing. We're gonna build electric, generating facilities. They are going to build. I'm gonna get them the approval under emergency declaration. I can get the approvals done myself without having to go through years of waiting.
And the big problem is we need double the energy we currently have in the United States. Can you imagine for AI to really be as big as we wanna have it because it's a very competitive it'll be very competitive with China and others. So I'm gonna give emergency declarations so that they can start building them almost immediately. And I'm I'm I think it was largely my idea because nobody thought this was possible. It wasn't that they were not smart because they're the smartest.
But I told them that what I want you to do is build your electric generating plant right next to your plant as a separate building connected. And they said, wow. You're kidding. And I said, no. No.
I'm not kidding. You don't have to hook into the grid, which is old and, you know, could be taken out. If it's taken out, they wouldn't have any way to get, any electricity. So, we are going to allow them to go on a very rapid base basis to build their plant, build the electric generating plant. They can fuel it with anything they want, and they may have coal as a backup.
Good clean coal. You know? If there were a problem with a with a pipe coming in, as an example, you're going with gas, oil and gas, and, a pipe gets blown up or for some reason doesn't work, there are some companies in the US that have coal sitting right by the plant so that if there's an emergency, they can go to that short term basis and use our very clean coal. So that's something else that a lot of people didn't even know about. But, nothing can destroy coal, not the weather, not a bomb, nothing.
It might make it a little smaller, might make it a little different shape, but coal is very strong as a backup. It's a great backup to have that facility, and it wouldn't cost much more more money. And we have more coal than anybody. We also have more oil and gas than anybody. So, we're gonna make it so that the plants will have their own electric generating facilities attached right to their plant.
They don't have to worry about a utility. They don't have to worry about anything, and we're gonna get very rapid approvals.
Speaker 3: Thank you. Thank you so much, mister President. We'll now go to another CEO that you know, very well, Brian Monahan, the CEO and Chair of Bank of America.
Speaker 5: Good afternoon, Mr. President, and congratulations and obviously eventful week for you and your family. If you remember 5 years ago, you came here and we walked among 150 CEOs from all over the world and you engaged with them about your policies and your procedures. This year, you're not here, and yet this week was eventful from the orders that you mentioned earlier. Literally a wave of orders coming out on immigration, on trade and many other matters.
And so as a representative of the United States here, we got a lot of questions about what does all this mean and how would the President square this with this clear focus on growth, prosperity, market growth stock market growth, a good bond market and bringing down prices. So how do you think about the impact of all these orders and how fast they come out and how you're going to balance them with that scorecard of being successful in both continuing GDP growth, bringing down inflation, and also having a good stock price appreciation for the American citizen?
Speaker 0: Well, I think it's gonna actually bring down inflation. It's gonna bring up jobs. We're gonna have a lot of jobs. We're gonna have a lot of companies moving in. You know, Brian, we're at 21%.
It was at 40%, and I got it down to 21%, the corporate tax. And it was actually if you look at state and city, it was, in many cases, much higher than 40%. I got it down to 21%, and now we're gonna bring it down from 21 to 15% if there's a big if, if you make your product in the US. So we're gonna have the lowest just about the lowest rate. It'll be the 21 is on the low side worldwide.
The 15 is about as low as it gets. And by far, the lowest of a large country, a large, you know, rich, powerful country by far, not even a contest. So we're gonna bring it down to 15% if you make your product in the USA. So that's gonna create a a tremendous buzz. We're also probably going back to the 1 year deduction where we, deduct you know, we we did that originally, and that was amazing what the impact that that had.
The 1 year deduction, which built up over a period of time and then it expires. But we're gonna go back to that when we do the renewal of the Trump tax plan. We have to get Democrats to approve it. But, you know, if, the Democrats didn't approve it, I don't know how they can survive with about a 45% tax increase because that's what it would be. And, so I think they're gonna be.
We're we've been working along with them pretty well. I I think it's very hard for a political group to say, let's charge people 45% more. So I think we're in good shape, but we're actually doing a reduction for business and small businesses where you're gonna be bring it down to 15%, which is really, something. And by the way, speaking of you, and you've done a fantastic job, but I hope you start opening your bank to conservatives because many conservatives complain that the banks are not allowing them to do business within the bank, and that included a place called Bank of America. This conserve they don't take conservative business.
And I don't know if the regulators mandated that because of Biden or what, but you and Jamie and everybody, I hope you're gonna open your banks to conservatives because what you're doing is wrong.
Speaker 5: Mister president, I'll say that, your friend Gianni was said hello told me to tell you hello, and we look forward to, sponsoring the World Cup when it comes both this summer for the club and next year. So thank you for getting that for the United States.

Speaker 6: Mister president, congratulations on a historic victory. I believe you don't know me as well as my fellow panelists, so a few words. Santander is one of the largest banks in the world by number of customers, 170,000,000. That's more than my friend Brian or my friend Jamie have. And those

Speaker 3: That was cheeky.
Speaker 6: We are a big investor in United States. We have many 1000000 customers, 12,000 employees. We're one of the largest auto lenders. And we recently launched a fully digital bank called OpenBank. We strongly believe banks have a pivotal role in the economy, and we can accelerate growth and help many more customers.
That's what we're doing in the United States. So, as Brian pointed out, we very much welcome your focus on deregulation and reducing bureaucracy. So my question is, what are your priorities, in this regard? And how fast is this gonna happen? Thank you very much.
Speaker 0: I think it's going to thank you, and congratulations. I know very much about your bank, and, you've done a fantastic job. Congratulations. We are going to, move very quickly. We've moved very quickly.
We've done things in the last 3 days that nobody thought were possible to do in years. And, it's all taken it's all taken effect. It's gonna have a huge impact on the economy, a huge positive impact. Money was being wasted on, crazy things. I mean, the Green New Deal was such a total disgrace.
What what how that was perpetrated. And it was conceived of by people that were average students, less than average students, I might add, and never even took a course in energy or the environment. It was just a game. Remember the world was gonna end in 12 years? Remember that?
Well, the 12 years has come and gone. It was gonna end. It was gonna all foam into Earth, but, you know, the time has come. The these people and they they really, they really scared the Democrats, large. I can't say the Republicans.
Republicans maybe could have fought harder to stop it, but it's been a tremendous waste of a tremendous waste of money. You know, during my 4 years, we had the cleanest air. We had the cleanest water, and yet we had the most productive economy in the history of our country. We had the most productive economy. Until COVID came, we had the most productive in the history of our country by far.
And, and and, actually, you could look worldwide. We were we were beating everybody from China to everybody else. So and we think we really now with what we have learned and all of the, other things that have taken place, we think we can even far surpass that. Actually, far, far surpass it. But we do one thing we're gonna be demanding is we're gonna be demanding respect from other nations.
Canada, we have a tremendous deficit with Canada. We're not gonna have that anymore. We can't do it. It's it's I don't know if it's good for them. As you probably know, I say you can always become a state.
And if you're a state, we won't have a deficit. We won't have to tariff you, etcetera, etcetera. But Canada has been very tough to deal with over the years, and it's not fair that we should have a 200,000,000,000 or $250,000,000,000 deficit. We don't need them to make our cars, and they make a lot of them. We don't need their lumber because we have our own forests, etcetera, etcetera.
We don't need their oil and gas. We have our we have more than anybody. So, you know, just as an example, with Mexico, we're dealing with Mexico, I think, very well. And, we're just, you know, we we just wanna be treated fairly with other nations because, there's hardly a nation in the world. And I blame this on us, and I blame it on, politicians that for some reason, I'm probably mostly at stupidity, but you could also say, other reasons.
But mostly stupidity, they've allowed other nations to take advantage of the US. So what we can't allow that to happen anymore. You know, we have debt. It's a very small debt when you compare it to value, the value of the assets that we have, but we don't wanna do that. We wanna just have, debt be obliterated, and we'll be able to do that fairly rapidly.
And, a lot of good things are gonna happen. And and, honestly, good things are gonna happen for the world, and good things are gonna happen for the people that are dealing with us, allies and beyond allies. One thing very important, I really would like to be able to meet with president Putin soon and get that war end ended. And and that's not from, the standpoint of economy or anything else. It's from the standpoint of millions of lives are being wasted.
Beautiful young people are being shot in the battlefield. You know? The bullet, a very flat land, as I said, and the bullet goes there's no there's no hiding. And a bullet the only thing that'll stop the bullet is a human body. And you have to see I've seen pictures of what's taken place.
It's a carnage, and we really have to stop that war. That war is horrible. And I'm not talking economy. I'm not talking economics. I'm not talking about natural resource.
I'm just talking about there's so many young people being killed in this war, and that's not including the people that have been killed as the cities are being, you know, knocked down building by building. So we really should get that stopped. Likewise, in the Middle East, I think we've made a lot of progress in the Middle East, and I think that's gonna that's gonna come along pretty well.

Speaker 3: Thank you, mister president. So we know that, most consequential relationship in the world is between the US and China. US, 28% of the global economy. China close to 20. That's almost half of the global GDP.
And we know that, you called, President Xi Jinping last Friday. We heard that you had a good discussion. How do you see the relationship between the US and China in the next 4 years under your leadership leadership?
Speaker 0: He called me, but I see it very good. I think that we're going to, have a very good relationship. All we want is fairness. We just want a level playing field. We don't wanna take advantage.
We've been having massive deficits with China. Biden allowed it to get out of hand. He's $1,100,000,000,000 deficit's ridiculous. And it's just an unfair relationship, and we have to make it just fair. We don't have to make it phenomenal.
We have to make it a fair relationship. Right now, it's not a fair relationship. The deficit is massive as it is with other countries, a lot of Asian countries, actually. But we have deficits that are very big, and we can't keep doing that. So we're not gonna keep doing that.
But, I like president Xi very much. I've always liked him. We always had a very good relationship. It was very strained with COVID coming out of Wuhan. Obviously, that strained it.
I'm sure it strained it with a lot of people, but, that strained our relationship. But we always had a a great relationship, I would say, and we look forward to doing very well with China and getting along with China. Hopefully, China can help us stop the war with, in particular, Russia, Ukraine. They have a great deal of power over that situation. And, we'll work with them, and I mentioned that with, during our phone conversation with president Xi.
And, hopefully, we could work together and get that stopped. We'd like to see denuclearization. In fact, with president Putin prior to an election result, which was frankly ridiculous, we were talking about denuclearization of our two countries, and China would have come along. China has, a a much smaller right now nuclear armament than us or field than us, but they're they're gonna be catching it at some point over the next 4 or 5 years. And, I will tell you that president Putin really liked the idea of of cutting way back on nuclear, and I think the rest of the world, we would have gotten them to follow.
And China would have come along too. China also liked it. A tremendous amounts of money are being spent on nuclear, and the destructive capability is something that we don't even wanna talk about today, because you don't wanna hear it. It's too depressing. So we wanna see if we can denuclearize, and I think that's very possible.
And I can tell you that president Putin wanted to do it. He and I wanted to do it. We had a good conversation with China. They would have been involved, and that would have been an unbelievable thing for the planet.
Speaker 3: Mister president, when you're, back here in Davos next year, will there be then a peace agreement with with Ukraine and Russia by then?
Speaker 0: Well, you're gonna have to ask Russia. Ukraine is ready to to make a deal. Just so you understand, this is a war that should have never started. If I were president, it would never have started. This is a war that should have never ever been started.
And and it wasn't started during my there was never even talk about it. I knew that it was the apple of president Putin's eye, but I also knew that there was no way he was going in, and he wasn't gonna go in. And then, when I was out, bad things happened, bad things were said. A lot of stupidity all around, and you end up with what you have. Now you have all these bombed out cities.
They look like demolition sites with many people killed. I think the the thing that you'll see about Ukraine is that far far more people have died than is being reported, and I've seen that. But far far more people have died. When you look at a city that's become a demolition site where big buildings have been collapsed by missiles hitting them and everything else, and they say one person was slightly injured. Now now many people were killed.
Those are big buildings. I was surprised at how that was my business. These are buildings that go 2 3 blocks long. They're 20 stories high. They're big, powerful buildings, and they were knocked down.
And there were a lot of people in those buildings that announced that 2 people were injured. That's not true. So I think you're gonna find that there were many more people killed in Ukraine in the Ukraine war than anybody has any idea. But if you look now, so many of the the people being killed are soldiers, just facing each other with guns, rifles, and drones, the new form of warfare drones. And it's a very sad thing to see.
And when you see pictures of the fields that I see, nobody wants to see it. You'll never be the same.

Speaker 1: Well, thank you very much, Klaus, and hello to everyone in beautiful Davos. This has been a truly historic week in the United States. 3 days ago, I took the oath of office, and we began the golden age of America. The recent presidential election was won by millions of votes and all 7, every one of them, all 7 swing states. It was a massive mandate from the American people like hasn't been seen in many years.
And some of the political pundits, even some of my so called enemies, said it was the most consequential election victory in a 129 years. That's quite nice. What the world has witnessed in the past 72 hours is nothing less than a revolution of common sense. Our country will soon be stronger, wealthier, and more united than ever before, and the entire planet will be more peaceful and prosperous as a result of this incredible momentum and what we're doing and going to do. My administration is acting with unprecedented speed to fix the disasters we've inherited from a totally inept group of people, and to solve every single crisis facing our country.
This begins with confronting the economic chaos caused by the failed policies of the last administration. Over the past 4 years, our government racked up $8,000,000,000,000 in wasteful deficit spending and inflicted nation wrecking energy restrictions, crippling regulations, and hidden taxes like never before. The result is the worst inflation crisis in modern history and sky high interest rates for our citizens and even throughout the world. Food prices and the price of almost every other thing known to mankind went through the roof. President Biden totally lost control of what was going on in our country, but in particular with our high inflation economy and at our border.
Because of these ruinous policies, total government spending this year is $1,500,000,000,000 higher than was projected to occur when I left office just 4 years ago. Likewise, the cost of servicing the debt is more than 230% higher than was projected in 2020. The inflation rate we are inheriting remains 50% higher than the historic target. It was the highest inflation probably in the history of our country. That's why from the moment I took office, I've taken rapid action to reverse each and every one of these radical left policies that created this calamity, in particular with immigration, crime, and inflation.
On day 1, I signed an executive order directing every member of my cabinet to marshal all powers at their disposal to defeat inflation and reduce the cost of disposal to defeat inflation and reduce the cost of daily life. I imposed a federal hiring freeze, a federal regulation freeze, a foreign aid freeze, and I created the new Department of Government Efficiency. I terminated the ridiculous and incredibly wasteful Green New Deal. I call it the Green New Scam. Withdrew from the one-sided Paris Climate Accord and ended the insane and costly electric vehicle mandate.
We're gonna let people buy the car they wanna buy. I declared a national energy emergency, and it's so important. National energy emergency to unlock the liquid gold under our feet and pave the way for rapid approvals of new energy infrastructure. The United States has the largest amount of oil and gas of any country on Earth, and we're going to use it. Not only will this reduce the cost of virtually all goods and services, it'll make the United States a manufacturing superpower and the world capital of artificial intelligence and crypto.
My administration has also begun the largest deregulation campaign in history, far exceeding even the record setting efforts of my last term. In total, the Biden administration imposed $50,000 in additional regulatory costs on the average American household over the last 4 years. I have promised to eliminate 10 old regulations for every new regulation, which will soon put many 1,000 of dollars back in the pockets of American families. To further unleash our economy, our majorities in the house and senate, which we also took along with the presidency, are going to pass the largest tax cut in American history, including massive tax cuts for workers and family, and big tax cuts for domestic producers and manufacturers. And we're working with the Democrats on getting an extension of the original Trump tax cuts as you probably know by just reading any paper.
My message to every business in the world is very simple. Come make your product in America, and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on earth. We're bringing them down very substantially even from the original Trump tax cuts. But if you don't make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply, you will have to pay a tariff, differing amounts, but a tariff which will direct 100 of 1,000,000,000 of dollars and even 1,000,000,000,000 of dollars into our treasury to strengthen our economy and pay down debt. Under the Trump administration, there will be no better place on earth to create jobs, build factories, or grow a company than right here in the good old USA.
Already, Americans' economic you can see this, I think, maybe even in your in your wonderful, wonderful room that you're all gathered together, so many of my friends. But Americans, the economic confidence is soaring like we haven't seen in many, many decades. Maybe not at all. Upon my election, it was just announced that small business optimism skyrocketed by 41 points in a single month. That's the highest ever.
There's never been anything like that. SoftBank has announced between a $102,000,000,000 investment in the US economy because of the election result. And just 2 days ago, Oracle, SoftBank, and OpenAI announced a $500,000,000,000 investment in AI infrastructure. Other companies likewise have announced 1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000,000 adding up to 1,000,000,000,000 of, investment in America and the United States. And it's also reported today in the papers that, Saudi Arabia will be investing at least $600,000,000,000 in America, but I'll be asking the crown prince, who's a fantastic guy, to round it out to around 1,000,000,000,000.
I think they'll do that because we've been very good to them. And I'm also going to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down the cost of oil. You gotta bring it down, which frankly, I'm surprised they didn't do before the election. That didn't show a lot of love by them not doing it. I was a little surprised by that.
If the price came down, the Russia, Ukraine war would end immediately. Right now, the price is high enough that that war will continue. You gotta bring down the oil price. You're gonna end that war. They should have done it long ago.
They're very responsible, actually, to a certain extent for what's taking place. Millions of lives are being lost. With oil prices going down, I'll demand that interest rates drop immediately, and likewise, they should be dropping all over the world. Interest rates should follow us. All over the progress that you're seeing is happening because of our historic victory in a recent presidential election, one that has become quite well known throughout the world.
I think a lot of things are happening to a lot of countries. They say that there's light shining all over the world since the election, and even countries that we aren't particularly friendly with, are happy because they understand what there is a future and then how great the future will be. Under our leadership, America is back and open for business. And this week, I'm also taking swift action to stop the invasion at our southern border. They allowed people to come in at levels that nobody's ever seen before.
It was ridiculous. I decided a and declared to just to, to do, and very, very importantly, a national emergency on our border immediately halted all entry of illegal border crossers, of which there were many, and began properly returning the illegal trespassers back to the place from which they came. That action, as you've probably seen, has already started very strongly. I've deployed active duty US military and national guard troops to the border to assist in repelling the invasion. It was really an invasion.
We will not allow our territory to be violated. After 4 long years, the United States is strong and sovereign and a beautiful nation. Once again, it's a strong sovereign nation. In addition, I'm pleased to report that America is also a free nation once again. On day 1, I signed an executive order to stop all government censorship.
No longer will our government label the speech of our own citizens as misinformation or disinformation, which are the favorite words of censors and those who wish to stop the free exchange of ideas and, frankly, progress. We have saved free speech in America, and we've saved it strongly. With another historic executive order this week, I also ended the weaponization of law enforcement against the American people and, frankly, against politicians and restored the fair, equal, and impartial rule of law. My administration has taken action to abolish all discriminatory diversity, equity, and inclusion nonsense, and these are policies that were absolute nonsense throughout the government and the private sector. With the recent yet somewhat unexpected great supreme court decision just made, America will once again become a merit based country.
You have to hear that word, merit based country. And I've made it official, an official policy of the United States, that there are only 2 genders, male and female. And we will have no men participating in women's sports, and transgender operations, which became the rage, will occur very rarely. Finally, as we restore common sense in America, we're moving quickly to bring back strength and peace and stability abroad. I'm also going to ask all NATO nations to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, which is what it should have been years ago.
It was only at 2%, and most nations didn't pay until I came along. I insisted that they pay, and they did because the United States was really paying the difference at that time, and it's was unfair to the United States. But many, many things have been unfair for many years to the United States. Before even taking office, my team negotiated a ceasefire agreement in the Middle East, which wouldn't have happened without us, as I think most of the people in the room know. Earlier this week, the hostages began to return to their families.
They are returning, and it's a beautiful sight, and they'll be coming in more and more. They started coming back on Sunday. Our efforts to secure a peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine are now hopefully underway. It's so important to get that done. That is an absolute killing field.
Millions of soldiers are being killed. Nobody's seen anything like it since World War 2. They're laying dead all over the flat fields. It's a flat field farmland, and there's millions of Russians and millions of Ukrainians. Nobody's seen anything like it since World War 2.
It's time to end it. And here in America, we have big events coming up. Next year, we have the 250th anniversary of America's founding. I'm so honored to be president doing that. That's been a big event.
They've been talking about it for 10 years. We also have the World Cup, and I understand Gianni, Gianni's in the room. Infantino, he was, very instrumental in helping us get it. He's there with you someplace, I think, and I wanna thank him for that. And then we have the Olympics coming up, which I was instrumental in getting also in my first term.
And who would have known that by skipping a term, I would get the Olympics? I was upset. I said, you know, I got the Olympics to come and I won't be president, but it turned out through a stroke of luck or whatever you might call it that I'm gonna be president during the World Cup and the Olympics and the 250th anniversary. So that's gonna be 3 big events. And we've accomplished more in less than 4 days.
We have really been working 4 days than other administrations have accomplished in 4 years, and we're just getting started. It's really an amazing thing to see, and the spirit and the light over our country has been incredible. Under the last administration, our nation has suffered greatly, but we're going to bring it back and make it greater, bigger, stronger, better than ever before. I wanna thank everybody for being with you. I would have been there myself except the inauguration was 2 days ago.
I thought it might be a little bit quick to make it the first stop, but we'll get there one day. We hope to get there. But I I do appreciate. I heard the audience is fantastic, and many of my friends are in the audience. And, I will be taking questions now from some very distinguished people.

Speaker 2: So we also know, mister president, that you open up for interaction here. We have a great panel with some of the most distinguished business people in the world. Let me start, with someone that you know really well that I think is almost a neighbor of you in Malara in in Florida. Mister Steve, Schwartzman, chairman, CEO, and cofounder of Blackstone Group. So, Steve, floor is yours.
Speaker 3: Well, mister president Hello, Steve. I'm sure the crown prince of Saudi Arabia will be really glad you gave this speech today. I hope so. You've had the busiest 4 days that anybody can imagine, and congratulations for that. And, my question, is is about some of the things I've observed here at Davos.
It's a terrific forum. I've met lots of people, as usual. I think I've been here 30 years. And a lot of the European business people, have expressed enormous frustration with the regulatory regime in the EU, and they attribute slower growth rates here because of the numerous factors, but especially because of regulations. And you've taken a completely different approach in this area.
And if you could explain the theory of what you're doing, how you're gonna do it, and what you expect the outcome to be, I'd appreciate it.
Speaker 1: Well, thank you very much, and congratulations, Steve. You're a friend of mine, but on a great career. You have had an amazing career and it continues. I just wanna congratulate you. You're very inspirational to a lot of people.
I wanna talk about the EU because you mentioned specifically that I've also had a lot of friends and leaders of countries. I've gotten to know them all my first term and a little bit during this period of 4 years. And know them well, like them a lot, but they're very frustrated because of, the time everything seems to take to get approved, environmental impact statements for things that you shouldn't even have to do that, and many, many other ways that it takes. And I'm gonna give you a quick little example. I in the private life, my beautiful private life, before I had all these things happening, the world is a little different.
I had a nice simple life. You knew that. But, when I had that simple life, I did projects. And I had a big project in Ireland, and it had to get approval on something that would have made it even better. And I got the approval from Ireland in a period of a week, and it was a very, very, very efficient, good approval.
And they informed me though, the problem is you're gonna have to get it from the EU, and we think that'll take 5 to 6 years. And I said, you have to be kidding. And this was before politics. And I said, wait a minute. It's not that important.
I don't wanna go 5 or 6 years, but it would have been a big investment. It would have been nice. It would have been good for the project. And I sent the people to the EU to see if they could speed it up, and basically, it was a 5 or 6 year wait just to get a simple approval that Ireland gave me in a period of literally not much more than a week. And I realized right then, that was the first time I really was involved with the EU, but I realized right then that's a problem.
And I didn't even bother applying to do it. And or if I did, I pulled it very quickly. I don't I have to be very accurate because I don't wanna be criticized. He did apply, actually. No.
I wanna be very accurate. So, I don't think I did. But if I did, I pulled it quickly. It was just something you you couldn't wait 5 years or 6 years to get an approval. So a lot of, in a very big business sense, a lot of people are are claiming that's the problem.
From the standpoint of America, the, EU treats us very, very unfairly, very badly. They have a large tax that we know about and a VAT tax, and it's a very substantial one. They don't take our essentially, don't take our farm products, and they don't take our cars, yet they send cars to us by the 1,000,000. They put tariffs on things that we wanna do, like, for instance, I think they actually, in terms of these are non economic or non monetary tariffs, and and those are very bad. And they make it very difficult to bring products into Europe, and yet they expect to be selling and they do sell their products in the United States.
So we have, you know, 100 of 1,000,000,000 of dollars of deficits with the EU. And nobody's happy with it, and we're gonna do something about it, but nobody's happy with it. So I think the EU has to speed up their process. Friends of mine that are in, some of the nations within the great people, they they wanna be able to compete better, and you can't compete when you can't get go through the approval process fast. There's no reason why it can't go faster.
So, you know, I'm I'm I'm trying to be constructive because I love Europe. I love the countries of Europe, but the process is a very cumbersome one. And, they and they do treat the United States of America very, very unfairly with the VAT taxes and all of the other taxes they impose. One other just to finish up, I got a call from the head of a major airline, one of the biggest airlines in the world, and he said, sir, could you help us? What?
Landing in Europe is brutal. They charge us fees for everything, and it's so unfair. I said, how does it compare to China? He said, it's it's much worse. And, the other thing, as you know, they took, court cases with Apple, and they supposedly won a case that most people didn't think was much of a case.
They won 15 or 16,000,000,000 from Apple. They won 1,000,000,000 from Google. I think they're after Facebook for 1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000. These are American companies. Whether you like them or not, they're they're American companies, and they shouldn't be doing that.
And, that's as far as I'm concerned, it's a form of taxation. So we have some very big complaints with the EU. Thank you.
Speaker 2: Thank you, very much, mister president. We'll now, go to one of your friends, in the EU, Patrick Poiana. He's the chairman, CEO of, Total Energies. I guess you have a question ready, Patrick, for the President.
Speaker 0: Mr. President, as we understand energy is at the top of your agenda and it's an honor for me to represent the energy industry tonight. In this panel, TotalEnergies is indeed the 4th largest oil and gas and electricity company in the world. I will not ask you a question about the oil price. It's quite clear what you expect from us.
We'll go to gas more. And our company is the largest number one exporter LNG from the U. S. Company. We are a strong contributor to and we invest in a mammoth LNG projects in Texas $20,000,000,000 it's far from $200,000,000,000 but it's $20,000,000,000 And we contribute with that to security of supply to Europe as we export this LNG to Europe.
Some experts fear that if there are too many projects developed in the U. S. On LNG, this could have an inflationary impact on the U. S. Domestic gas price.
And we recommend a pause on these projects. I would ask you the following question. What are your views on about such a pause on investments on LNG in the U. S? What would happen if you would observe an increased domestic gas price because of these exports?
And final question which is important for Europe, would you agree to guarantee security of supplies of U. S. LNG to Europe?
Speaker 1: Well, on the last part of your question, yes, I would. I would make sure that you get it. If we make a deal, we make a deal. You'll get it. Because a lot of people do have that problem.
They make a deal and then it can't get supplied because of, war type problems and other problems. So we would absolutely do that. LNG is very interesting because when I took office, for the first term, one of the first things I looked at was 2 there were 2 very massive plants in Louisiana, state that has been very good to be wanted by many, many points. And, I felt strongly indebted to it, actually. And they said there are 2 plants that have been under environmental consideration for more than 10 years.
And they were costing, as you say, you know how expensive those plants are, but they were costing, like, 12,000,000,000 and I think 14 or 15,000,000,000, but they couldn't get their permits. It was they were in review for years, many, many years, like a decade or more. And I said, so ridiculous. I know so much about that because in the construction industry, I had to go through it too, but I got good at it after a while. But I I went I saw the, projects that you're talking about a total investment of, 25 to $30,000,000,000, and it looked like it was gonna end.
They couldn't get their permits, and I got them done in less than a week. It was done, completed. In fact, when they called them to announce that, it was done, the countries, largely countries, Japan was involved and another country and some very big investors, they couldn't believe it. They actually couldn't believe it. And I said, just do yourself one favor.
Don't pay any consultants because the only one that got it done was me. I got it done because it was the right thing to do for the US and for the world, but the consultants had nothing to do with it. You know? The consultants go in and they say, give us 1,000,000 of dollars because Trump did it. Nobody called me about it.
I just heard it was a problem for years. And I got it done because it was the right thing to do for the US and the right thing to do for beyond. It had to do with energy. Very important. So I think it's very important.
I I think the the, you know, I disagree with 1. I think the more that you do, the lower the price is gonna go. And what I'd like to see is, rapid approvals. We're gonna give very rapid approvals in the United States like with the AI plans, talking to many people who wanna build them. That's gonna be a very big thing.
We're gonna build electric, generating facilities. They are going to build. I'm gonna get them the approval under emergency declaration. I can get the approvals done myself without having to go through years of waiting. And the big problem is we need double the energy we currently have in the United States.
Can you imagine for AI to really be as big as we wanna have it? Because it's a very competitive it'll be very competitive with China and others. So I'm gonna give emergency declarations so that they can start building them almost immediately. And I'm I'm I think it was largely my idea because nobody thought this was possible. It wasn't that they were not smart because they're the smartest.
But I told them that what I want you to do is build your electric generating plant right next to your plant as a separate building connected. And they said, wow. You're kidding. And I said, no. No.
I'm not kidding. You don't have to hook into the grid, which is old and, you know, could be taken out. If it's taken out, they wouldn't have any way to get, any electricity. So, we are going to allow them to go on a very rapid base basis to build their plant, build the electric generating plant. They can fuel it with anything they want, and they may have coal as a backup.
Good clean coal, you know. If there were a problem with a with a pipe coming in, as an example, you're going with gas, oil or gas, and, a pipe gets blown up or for some reason doesn't work, there are some companies in the US that have coal sitting right by the plant so that if there's an emergency, they can go to that short term basis and use our very clean coal. So that's something else that a lot of people didn't even know about, but nothing can destroy coal. Not the weather, not a bomb, nothing. It might make it a little smaller, might make it a little different shape, but coal is very strong as a backup.
It's a great back up to have that facility, and it wouldn't cost much more more money. And we have more coal than anybody. We also have more oil and gas than anybody. So, we're gonna make it so that the plants will have their own electric generating facilities attached right to their plant. They don't have to worry about a utility.
They don't have to worry about anything, and we're going to get very rapid approvals.
Speaker 2: Thank you. Thank you so much, mister president. We'll now go to another CEO that you know very well, Brian Monahan, the CEO and chair of Bank of America.
Speaker 4: Good afternoon, mister president, and, congratulations and obviously eventful week for you and your family. If you remember 5 years ago, you came here and we walked among a 150 CEOs from all over the world and you engaged with them about your policies and your procedures. This year, you're not here, and yet this week was eventful from the orders that you mentioned earlier. Literally, a wave of orders coming out on immigration, on trade, and many other matters. And so as a representative of the United States here, we got a lot of questions about what does all this mean and how would, the president square this with his clear focus on growth, prosperity, market growth stock market growth, a good bond market, and bringing down prices.
So how do you think about the impact of all these orders and how fast they come out and how you're going to balance them with that scorecard of being successful in both continuing GDP growth, bringing down inflation, and also having a good stock price appreciation for the American citizen?
Speaker 1: Well, I think it's gonna actually bring down inflation. It's gonna bring up jobs. We're gonna have a lot of jobs. We're gonna have a lot of companies moving in. You know, Brian, we're at 21%.
It was at 40%, and I got it down to 21%, the corporate tax. And it was actually if you look at state and city, it was in many cases much higher than 40%. I got it down to 21%, and now we're gonna bring it down from 21 to 15% if there's a big if, if you make your product in the US. So we're gonna have the lowest just about the lowest rate. It'll be the 21 is on the low side worldwide.
The 15 is about as low as it gets. And by far, the lowest of a large country. A large, you know, rich, powerful country by far, not even a contest. So we're gonna bring it down to 15% if you make your product in the USA. So that's gonna create a a tremendous buzz.
We're also probably going back to the 1 year deduction where we, deduct you know, we we did that originally, and that was amazing what the impact that that had. The one year deduction, which built up over a period of time, and then it expires. But we're gonna go back to that when we do the renewal of the Trump tax plan. We have to get Democrats to approve it. But, you know, if, the Democrats didn't approve it, I don't know how they can survive with about a 45% tax increase because that's what it would be.
And, so I think they're gonna do it. We're we've been working along with them pretty well. I I think it's very hard for a political group to say, let's charge people 45% more. So I think we're in good shape, but we're actually doing a reduction for business and small businesses where you're gonna be bring it down to 15%, which is really, something. And by the way, speaking of you, and you've done a fantastic job, but I hope you start opening your bank to conservatives because many conservatives complain that the banks are not allowing them to do business within the bank, and that included a place called Bank of America.

We've done things in the last 3 days that nobody thought were possible to do in years. And, it's all taken it's all taken effect. It's gonna have a huge impact on the economy, a huge positive impact. Money was being wasted on, crazy things. I mean, the Green New Deal was such a total disgrace.
What what how that was perpetrated. And it was conceived of by people that were average students, less than average students, I might add, and never even took a course in energy or the environment. It was just a game. Remember the world was gonna end in 12 years? Remember that?
Well, the 12 years has come and gone. It was gonna end. It was gonna all foam into Earth, but, you know, the time has come. These people, and they they really, they really scared the Democrats large. I can't say the Republicans.
Republicans maybe could have fought harder to stop it, but it's been a tremendous waste of a tremendous waste of money. You know, during my 4 years, we had the cleanest air, we had the cleanest water, and yet we had the most productive economy in the history of our country. We had the most productive economy. Until COVID came. We had the most productive in the history of our country by far.
And, and and, actually, you could look worldwide. We were we were beating everybody from China to everybody else. So and we think we really now with what we have learned and all of the, other things that have taken place, we think we can even far surpass that. Actually, far, far surpass it. But we do one thing we're gonna be demanding is we're gonna be demanding respect from other nations.
Canada, we have a tremendous deficit with Canada. We're not gonna have that anymore. We can't do it. It's it's I I don't know if it's good for them. As you probably know, I say you can always become a state.
And if you're a state, we won't have a deficit. We won't have to tariff you, etcetera, etcetera. But Canada has been very tough to deal with over the years, and it's not fair that we should have a 200,000,000,000 or 2 $50,000,000,000 deficit. We don't need them to make our cars, and they make a lot of them. We don't need their lumber because we have our own forests, etcetera, etcetera.
We don't need their oil and gas. We have our we have more than anybody. So, you know, just as an example, with Mexico, we're dealing with Mexico, I think, very well. And, we're just, you know, we we just wanna be treated fairly with other nations because, there's hardly a nation in the world. And I blame this on us, and I blame it on, politicians that for some reason, I'm probably mostly at stupidity, but you could also say, other reasons.
But mostly stupidity, they've allowed other nations to take advantage of the US. And what we can't allow that to happen anymore. You know, we have debt. It's a very small debt when you compare it to value, the value of the assets that we have, but we don't wanna do that. We wanna just have, debt be obliterated, and we'll be able to do that fairly rapidly.
And, a lot of good things are gonna happen. And and, honestly, good things are gonna happen for the world, and good things are gonna happen for the people that are dealing with us, allies and beyond allies. One thing very important, I really would like to be able to meet with president Putin soon and get that war ended. And and that's not from the standpoint of economy or anything else. It's from the standpoint of millions of lives are being wasted.
Beautiful young people are being shot in the battlefield. You know? The bullet, a very flat land, as I said, and the bullet goes there's no there's no hiding. And a bullet the only thing that'll stop the bullet is a human body. And you have to see, I've seen pictures of what's taken place.
It's a carnage, and we really have to stop that war. That war is horrible. And I'm not talking economy. I'm not talking economics. I'm not talking about natural resource.
I'm just talking about there's so many young people being killed in this war, and that's not including the people that have been killed as the cities are being, you know, knocked down building by building. So we really should get that stopped. Likewise, in the Middle East, I think we've made a lot of progress in the Middle East, and I think that's gonna that's gonna come along pretty well. Speaker 2: Thank you, mister president. So we know that, most consequential relationship in the world is between the US and China. US 28% of the global economy. China close to 20. That's almost half of the global GDP.
And we know that, you called, President Xi Jinping last Friday. We heard that you had a good discussion. How do you see the relationship between the US and China in the next 4 years under your leadership?
Speaker 1: He called me, but I see it very good. I think that we're going to, have a very good relationship. All we want is fairness. We just want a level playing field. We don't wanna take advantage.
We've been having massive deficits with China. Biden allowed it to get out of hand. He's $1,100,000,000,000 deficit's ridiculous. And it's just an unfair relationship, and we have to make it just fair. We don't have to make it phenomenal.
We have to make it a fair relationship. Right now, it's not a fair relationship. The deficit is massive. As it is with other countries, a lot of Asian countries actually, but we have deficits that are very big, and we can't keep doing that. So we're not gonna keep doing that.
But, I like president Xi very much. I've always liked him. We always had a very good relationship. It was very strained with COVID coming out of Wuhan. Obviously, that strained it.
I'm sure it strained it with a lot of people, but, that strained our relationship. But we always had a a great relationship, I would say, and we look forward to doing very well with China and getting along with China. Hopefully, China can help us stop the war with, in particular, Russia, Ukraine. They have a great deal of power over that situation, and, we'll work with them. And I mentioned that with, during our phone conversation with president Xi, and hopefully, we could work together and get that stopped.
We'd like to see denuclearization. In fact, with president Putin prior to an election result, which was frankly ridiculous, We were talking about denuclearization of our 2 countries, and China would have come along. China has a much smaller right now nuclear armament than us or field than us, but they're they're gonna be catching it at some point over the next 4 or 5 years. And, I will tell you that president Putin really liked the idea of of cutting way back on nuclear, and I think the rest of the world, we would have gotten them to follow. And China would have come along too.
China also liked it. Tremendous amounts of money are being spent on nuclear, and the destructive capability is something that we don't even wanna talk about today, because you don't wanna hear it. It's too depressing. So we wanna see if we can denuclearize, and I think that's very possible. And I can tell you that president Putin wanted to do it.
He and I wanted to do it. We had a good conversation with China. They would have been involved, and that would have been an unbelievable thing for the planet. And I hope it

Speaker 1: Well, you're gonna have to ask Russia. Ukraine is ready to to make a deal. Just so you understand, this is a war that should have never started. If I were president, it would never have started. This is a war that should have never ever been started.
And and it wasn't started during my there was never even talk about it. I knew that it was the apple of president Putin's eye, but I also knew that there was no way he was going in and he wasn't gonna go in. And then, when I was out, bad things happened, bad things were said, a lot of stupidity all around, and you end up with what you have. Now you have all these bombed out cities that look like demolition sites with many people killed. I think the the thing that you'll see about Ukraine is that far far more people have died than is being reported, and I've seen that.
But far far more people have died. When you look at a city that's become a demolition site where big buildings have been collapsed by missiles hitting them and everything else, and they say one person was slightly injured. Now now many people were killed. Those are big buildings. I was surprised at how that was my business.
These are buildings that go 2 3 blocks long. They're 20 stories high. They're big powerful buildings, and they were knocked down. And there were a lot of people in those buildings that announced that 2 people were injured. That's not true.
So I think you're gonna find that there were many more people killed in Ukraine in the Ukraine war than anybody has any idea. But if you look now, so many of the the people being killed are soldiers, just facing each other with guns, rifles, and drones, the new form of warfare drones. And it's a very sad thing to see. This has been a truly historic week in the United States. 3 days ago, I took the oath of office, and we began the golden age of America. The recent presidential election was won by 1,000,000 of votes and all 7, every one of them, all 7 swing states. It was a massive mandate from the American people like hasn't been seen in many years.
And some of the political pundits, even some of my so called enemies, said it was the most consequential election victory in a 129 years. That's quite nice. What the world has witnessed in the past 72 hours is nothing less than a revolution of common sense. Our country will soon be stronger, wealthier, and more united than ever before, and the entire planet will be more peaceful and prosperous as a result of this incredible momentum and what we're doing and going to do. My administration is acting with unprecedented speed to fix the disasters we've inherited from a totally inept group of people and to solve every single crisis facing our country.
This begins with confronting the economic chaos caused by the failed policies of the last administration. Over the past 4 years, our government racked up $8,000,000,000,000 in wasteful deficit spending and inflicted nation wrecking energy restrictions, crippling regulations, and hidden taxes like never before. The result is the worst inflation crisis in modern history and sky high interest rates for our citizens and even throughout the world. Food prices and the price of almost every other thing known to mankind went through the roof. But Americans, the economic confidence is soaring like we haven't seen in many, many decades. Maybe not at all. Upon my election, it was just announced that small business optimism skyrocketed by 41 points in a single month. That's the highest ever.
There's never been anything like that. SoftBank has announced between a $102,100,000,000,000 investment in the US economy because of the election result. And just 2 days ago, Oracle, SoftBank, and OpenAI announced a $500,000,000,000 investment in AI infrastructure. Other companies, likewise, have announced 1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000 adding up the trillions of, investment in America and the United States. And it's also reported today in the papers that, Saudi Arabia will be investing at least $600,000,000,000 in America, but I'll be asking the crown prince, who's a fantastic guy, to round it out to around 1,000,000,000,000.
I think they'll do that because we've been very good to them. And I'm also going to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down the cost of oil. You gotta bring it down, which frankly, I'm surprised they didn't do before the election. That didn't show a lot of love by them not doing it. I was a little surprised by that.
If the price came down, the Russia Ukraine war would end immediately. Right now, the price is high enough that that war will continue. You gotta bring down the oil price. You're gonna end that war. They should have done it long ago.
They're very responsible, actually, to a certain extent for what's taking place. Millions of lives are being lost. With oil prices going down, I'll demand that interest rates drop immediately. And, likewise, they should be dropping all over the world. Interest rates should follow us.
All over the progress that you're seeing is happening because of our historic victory in a recent presidential election, one that has become quite well known throughout the world. I think a lot of things are happening to a lot of countries. They say that there's light shining all over the world since the election, and even countries that we aren't particularly friendly with, are happy because they understand what there is a future and then how great the future will be under our leadership. America is back and open for business. And this week, I'm also taking swift action to stop the invasion at our southern border.
They allowed people to come in at levels that nobody's ever seen before. It was ridiculous. I decided a and declared to just to, to do. And very, very importantly, a national emergency on our border immediately halted all entry of illegal border crossers, of which there were many, and began properly returning the illegal trespassers back to the place from which they came. That action, as you've probably seen, has already started very strongly.
I've deployed active duty US military and national guard troops to the border to assist in repelling the invasion. It was really an invasion. We will not allow our territory to be violated. After 4 long years, the United States is strong and sovereign and a beautiful nation once again. It's a strong sovereign nation.
In addition, I'm pleased to report that America is also a free nation once again. On day 1, I signed an executive order to stop all government censorship. No longer will our government label the speech of our own citizens as misinformation or disinformation, which are the favorite words of censors and those who wish to stop the free exchange of ideas and, frankly, progress. We have saved free speech in America, and we've saved it strongly. With another historic executive order this week, I also ended the weaponization of law enforcement against the American people and, frankly, against politicians and restored the fair, equal, and impartial rule of law.
My administration has taken action to abolish all discriminatory diversity, equity, and inclusion nonsense, and these are policies that were absolute nonsense throughout the government and the private sector. With the recent yet somewhat unexpected great supreme court decision just made, America will once again become a merit based country. You have to hear that word. Merit based country. And I've made it official, an official policy of the United States, that there are only 2 genders, male and female.
And we will have no men participating in women's sports, and transgender operations, which became the rage, will occur very rarely. Finally, as we restore common sense in America, we're moving quickly to bring back strength and peace and stability abroad. I'm also going to ask all NATO nations to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, which is what it should have been years ago. It was only at 2%, and most nations didn't pay until I came along. I insisted that they pay, and they did because the United States was really paying the difference at that time, and it was unfair to the United States.
But many, many things have been unfair for many years to the United States. Before even taking office, my team negotiated a cease fire agreement in the Middle East, which wouldn't have happened without us, as I think most of the people in the room know. Earlier this week, the hostages began to return to their families. They are returning, and it's a beautiful sight, and they'll be coming in more and more. They started coming back on Sunday.
Our efforts to secure a peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine are now hopefully underway. It's so important to get that done. That is an absolute killing field. Millions of soldiers are being killed. Nobody's seen anything like it since World War 2.
They're laying dead all over the flat fields. It's a flat field farmland, and there's millions of Russians and millions of Ukrainians. Nobody's seen anything like it since World War 2. It's time to end it. And here in America, we have big events coming up.
Next year, we have the 250th anniversary of America's founding. I'm so honored to be president during that. That's been a big event. They've been talking about it for 10 years. We also have the World Cup, and I understand Gianni, Gianni's in the room.

It's really an amazing thing to see, and the spirit and the light over our country has been incredible. Speaker 0: Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to, introduce someone who I consider one of the smartest people I know and whose understanding of the world is matched only by his ability to synthesize huge themes, and illustrate them with precise detail, someone who's traveled the world for forty years, a man who not only writes about leaders of the world but knows them personally, professor Jeffrey Sachs.
Speaker 1: Thanks. Alright. Thank you. Thank you.
Speaker 0: Thank you very much, Jeff. Thank you. So how long I just you were telling me backstage, I didn't realize this, for for those who enjoyed prime minister Orbanet. I'm one of them. I was tell us when you first met the prime minister.
Speaker 1: We met, forty six years ago. Thirty six years ago. 1989.
Speaker 0: He was just getting out of jail at that point.
Speaker 1: No. Yeah. They were just opening up, and, this young guy was starting a political party. And he gave me a call, and, we sat in our my backyard in, in Boston for a few hours. And I thought, okay.
This guy's gonna be prime minister for most of the next, thirty six years. It's very, very impressive then, and it's very impressive now.
Speaker 0: So you said that. You saw in him and it's not just about him, but it's about what are the markers of enduring leadership, what makes, you know, this politician impressive while most of them are not impressive. What did you see in him? What do you see in leaders like him who have been successful?
Speaker 1: This was 1989. It was even before the Berlin Wall Fell, but Hungary had cut the barbed wire. So people were that was the beginning of the end in 1989 of the Soviet domination of of Eastern Europe. And, this young guy said, I'm gonna make a political party, and I'm gonna be a leader, and I'm gonna make a new Hungary. And, what he showed was vision that, look, we're a great country.
We've been held back for the last forty five years. I'm gonna help lead the way. And it was a, Fidesz, young democrats, I think was the translation of it, and he just had the idea. We're we're gonna move forward. He was a kid, and, we were all kids then.
And, you could see that there was energy, vision, foresight, and and it proved right.
Speaker 0: Yeah. And a toughness. So you heard his analysis, I think, of where we are, with the war in Ukraine election of Trump on the basis in part of, you know, his promise to to try to end this if he can. You saw the new secretary of defense say, no. We're not gonna support Ukraine's entry into NATO.
Where are we now?
Speaker 1: You know, yesterday was the most, important day for peace in maybe decades, actually. This war in Ukraine resulted from a very bad idea of The United States taken in 1994. It's a project. The project, was a project to expand NATO forever anywhere. Just keep moving east.
Keep moving not only to the first wave, which was the prime minister's country Hungary, Czech Republic, and Slovakia, but then move eastward closer to the former Soviet Union, into the former Soviet Union, surround Russia in the Black Sea region, go all the way to a little country in the South Caucasus, Georgia. It was mind boggling. Clinton signed on to that in 1994. It became what we call the deep state project, meaning it didn't really matter who the president was. Each president would come and basically would be informed.
NATO's moving eastward. You're part of that process. So Clinton started it in 1994. And as prime minister Orban said, he mentioned briefly, in 1990, on 02/09/1990, in unequivocal, clear as can be terms, The United States had said to president Mikhail Gorbachev, NATO will not move one inch eastward. And if you have any doubt about it, all the documents are now online, available.
You can scrutinize everything. Hans Dietrich Genscher, the US the German foreign minister said the same thing, same day. He's on tape actually explaining, no. No. I don't just mean within Eastern Germany.
I mean anywhere to the East. Clinton, being Clinton, and the US deep state being the US deep state started this project in 1994. They already had the idea by the way in in 1991, '90 '2 as soon as the Soviet Union ended. Now we move. Now we move eastward.
Now we control everything. Now we are the sole superpower. So this has gone on for thirty years and each president got into it under George Bush Junior, seven more countries were added, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Romania Nine in 02/2004. Then in 02/2007, president Putin said at the summit that's taking place right now, the Munich Security Summit, said stop. You told us no expansion, not an eastward expansion, even an inch, you said.
You've now done 10 countries. Stop. Perfectly reasonable. Stop. I don't think our president Donald Trump would much like to see China and Russia building their military bases up from Central America.
You know, this was how the Russians saw this. Why are you coming to our border when you told us you weren't gonna move? And there was one other thing that was very important in this, which is probably the most decisive thing and almost not even recognized. In 02/2002, the US did something really, really, really destabilizing, and that is it unilaterally left the anti ballistic missile treaty. That was a core strategy to stop a nuclear war between the two superpowers because what ABM had done for thirty years was to say, we each have deterrence.
You if you strike us, we can strike back. We'll limit our anti ballistic missiles so that both sides maintain deterrence. In 02/2002, the United States unilaterally, unprovoked, walked out of the ABM, said, no. No. We're not gonna do it anymore.
We're going to put anti ballistic missile systems into Russia's bordering territories. The Russians said, are you kidding? The US said, what's your problem? We do what we want. So in 02/2007, Putin stopped already.
In 02/2008, George Bush junior doubled down as Americans typically do and said, okay. Now we're moving to Ukraine and to Georgia. That was, why this war occurred. But Ukraine had one more sliver of, of life, and that was that they elected a president in 02/2010 that didn't want to be part of NATO, and the public didn't wanna be part of NATO. Why?
Because they knew this is very dangerous. Why get into this provocative situation? His name was Viktor Yanukovych. Americans don't like neutrality, but Yanukovych was trying to be neutral between the two sides. And The US played a rather unfortunate role on 02/22/2014 in a violent overthrow of this person.
And, that's when the war started. And it's been now ten years, and no president has, told the truth until yesterday, by the way. Yesterday is a historic day because the a call took place between president Putin and president Trump. It was the first call. We don't know if there had been a short call beforehand between the two of them, but there was no call by Biden and Putin.
With war going on for three years, no call. And now there was a call, and the readout from the American side was excellent. What president Trump said in the call was we respect Russia. We hear Russia's concerns. We fought on the same side in World War two.
Nice point, by the way. True. Russia lost Soviet Union lost 27,000,000 people in World War two and was an ally of The United States. A fact that wasn't mentioned for years and years and years by president Biden. And then the defense secretary head set the new defense secretary said yesterday the truth for the first time that Ukraine is not going to join NATO.
This is the basis for peace. This is absolutely the basis for peace, and they couldn't tell the truth for three decades. They could not admit what any of us knew because I've been around this region for thirty six years in detail. I sat with Boris Yeltsin. I sat with Mikhail Gorbachev.
But the Americans would not tell the truth publicly until yesterday that this was so provocative. It was a game. They thought they'd win the game. I don't know how many people here play or played in their childhood the game of risk. The game of risk was a big game for me.
You wanted your piece on every part of the world map. That was the game when you took over the whole world, world hegemony we now call it. You won. They're playing that game until this administration. So the two most import three important things have happened in my view in this administration so far.
First, our new secretary of state Marco Rubio told the fundamental truth. We are in a multipolar world. First time the sentence was uttered. He told the truth. What does it mean?
The American mindset for thirty years was we run the show. Marco Rubio said, well, we don't run the show. We live with other powerful countries. Great start. Second and third were the two events yesterday.
So I'm feeling about peace that this is really something that happened yesterday. If if they follow through, we know what Washington is like. There is every crazy idea swarming still. A project of thirty years doesn't go down and so visibly. And, of course, Europe is in a and so visibly.
And, of course, Europe is in a tizzy because Europe signed on to The US project. All these politicians in Europe are there where they are because they were part of The US project. And now The US is reversing its project, and you didn't tell us and you didn't what are we supposed to do? We're way out there. And so they're completely befuddled.
And I have to say, I told them personally, many of these leaders, and I mean personally, one by one for years, you are gonna get trapped this way because this project doesn't work. It doesn't make sense. It's a game for the Americans, but it's life and death for the Russians. So it cannot be won by the American side. It's impossible.
And I tried to tell them, and nobody in Europe either had the clarity or the guts to see it except the person that preceded me in this seat, prime minister Orban, because he was completely clear about this from the first day. Now others are starting, but even till today, the Europeans can't get it because they're so deeply invested in something that makes no sense. They should have said, Russia's big. It lives near near us. Let's cooperate.

I think one of the reasons we wound up in this position, we meaning The United States, but also Europe, is there's a habit of speech which reflects a habit of mind, which is an unwillingness to engage with ideas and instead resort immediately to attacking the other person on the basis of motive. Speaker 0: about any I know you've been the the butt of this too, not whining about it, but it's like Yeah. Is there even a culture in our foreign policy establishment of having rational conversations
Speaker 1: to the point where we
Speaker 0: can solve problems like this?
Speaker 1: You know, we've talked about, I think, an uncle of yours, who's, one of my favorite politicians of American history, j William Fulbright. And, he wrote a book in the nineteen sixties called the arrogance of power. And I was a a kid then, and I read that book like it was the coolest thing imaginable. This was the chairman of the US foreign relations committee saying, we're too arrogant to think clearly. That was amazing.
He was an amazing person. Now I think that's the fundamental problem. I'm not sure we're properly over it, but I have to say that, in nineteen ninety, ninety one, we had the chance for global peace, really for global peace. That doomsday clock of the atomic scientist which I like to refer to so much, which measures how close or far are we from nuclear war, was the farthest away it was ever in its history because the cold war had ended. So I was there as a as a young economist who actually knew something about economic stabilization, and I made proposals.
And, interestingly, just as a footnote, I advised the Polish government in 1989. I just long story, but suddenly as a kid, I happened to be there, and I helped write their plan. And I, everything I recommended for Poland was immediately accepted by the White House. It's a very odd thing. In fact, I went one day, I had an idea of mobilizing some finance to help Poland stabilize, and I called the Polish finance minister, said, do you mind if I try to raise a billion dollars for you today, which was a lot of money in in those days.
And said, if you raise a billion dollars, that would be great. So I called Bob Dole, our senate majority leader, whom I knew because of the Poland, work that I was doing, and he invited me immediately into his office. And he said, come back in an hour. So I came back in an hour. This was, September 1989.
And who was sitting there? General Brent Scowcroft. Oh, okay. He was the general who was our national security adviser. I was a kid.
So it was a little bit interesting moment. And he senator Dole said to me, explain to general Scowcroft your idea. So I handed him the paper, and this is how you do financial stabilization, and here's how you stabilize the currency. And Scowcroft looked at it and said, well, will this work? And I said, general, this will work.
And, Dole led me out of the office and said call me back, later in the day. So at 5PM, I called, and Dole said the White House has called. You have tell your friends you have the 1,000,000,000. So I raised a billion dollars that day. It was good.
So no. No. That nothing to do with me, because, it was the right idea. The Polish stabilized. I did a good I did a good thing.
I was a technically, equipped, sophisticated manager of a financial stabilization or not manager, but advisor on the financial stabilization. Okay. Then in 1991, I recommended the same thing for Gorbachev and for this creaking, collapsing, Soviet Union. Gorbachev wanted to have elections in all of the republics, and he wanted to democratize and stabilize. So okay.
I know something about that, mister president. And so we met, in, the Harvard Kennedy School, and, there were, one, two, three, four, five of us, a little team. One of them was the chief economic advisor of Gorbachev, Grigor Yablinski. One was the dean of the Kennedy School. One became a very senior diplomat, Bob Blackwell, that I deal with.
One was a very senior economist at, MIT, Stanley Fisher. We wrote a plan for how, the Soviet Union could stabilize, and I did the chapter on the financing. Basically, the same thing that I had said for Poland. Okay. It was completely rejected within about twelve hours in Washington.
Okay. I hated this for the next thirty years, I have to tell you, because we just could not take yes for an answer. Couple of months ago, someone sent me from the archives, the first time that I'd ever seen it, the National Security Council minutes rejecting the proposal. Fascinating to read because that's your life before your eyes watching this. There was a guy named Dick Darman who was a former colleague of mine.
The technical term, I don't I don't think I can say it in mixed company, actually. So I I I won't say what I would say about him.
Speaker 0: But it's an unpleasant English word.
Speaker 1: It's really nasty. Too nasty for polite company. He says in this thing, we should do the minimum necessary so that there's not a collapse, but nothing more. And, he quotes Machiavelli and, you know, we're not interested and we're not gonna do this. And it's it's really watching stupid people taking important stupid decisions.
Fools. By the way, they never called to say, can we discuss stabilization? This guy knew nothing. They don't understand anything. They don't care.
So what were they doing? They actually reached a conclusion at the end of the meeting. We're gonna do the minimum possible. I mean, minimum, minimum. It's not our business to help.
We're not gonna do any of that. That's arrogance of power. We don't have to do anything. Why? We're The United States.
We don't have to do anything. They didn't even look. The stakes for the world were very high. You could have a thirty minute phone call to understand financial stabilization. You could say in history, when countries are destabilized this way, here's how stability has worked.
That was my specialty. That's what I knew and taught at Harvard and knew knew a lot about. But they're so arrogant that it's not even to discuss for a half an hour any of this, and they didn't, and they took a terrible decision. And by the way, my point is not that that led on to this and this and this. No.
They took terrible decisions for the next thirty five years. This could have been stopped at any moment. Not one thing led to the next thing. No. One stupid decision, then the next one, then the next one, then the next one.
You have to learn to behave. The way you behave in this world is mutual respect. The way you behave is thinking you're not gonna be more secure if they're completely destabilized. That's what you have to understand. And that is not so hard to understand.
We teach it to our kids. At age four, we start teaching that. And then suddenly, if you want your passport to Washington, you have to forget it at age 40 or something. And that's how they behave. So that's my feeling about this, that it's just a kind of arrogance.
And you can see it in this writing which I find fascinating to go back and watch this tragedy unfold. Nineteen ninety seven, another wonderful moment if you wanna just watch hubris and tragedy. Very good book, good in that it's insightful, terrible book in that it's all wrong by Zvi Brzezinski. And many of you have probably read it called the Grand Chess Board, and he could have called it the game of risk. It would have been a little bit more accurate, but it was about how to make American dominance in the world.
And he has a chapter about expanding NATO to Ukraine. Exactly that. He's and he talks about Europe and NATO expanding eastward. And the question that he asked in 1997 is, what can the Russians do about it? Because they're weak.
And he answers meticulously. He considers, would Russia ever ally with China? Impossible.
Speaker 0: He can That'll that'll never happen.
Speaker 1: That'll never happen. Could Russia ever ally with Iran? No. Impossible. That will never happen.
So you watch like we watch now the Chat GPT thinking out loud. It's all there. It's all wrong, and it was all American policy for the next twenty five years. That's tragedy.
Speaker 0: May may I ask a question, though? Like, a kind of thematic fundamental question. So, great empire, one of it you know, empires tend to be arrogant. I think that's a feature of empires.
Speaker 1: That is it.
Speaker 0: But a an enduring empire shows stability. Its goal is stability. Because it understands exactly what you said I thought so nicely. It doesn't help you if your neighbors are in chaos. It doesn't it doesn't help you.
It's against your own interest. So that's such an obvious insight. The Roman Empire was based on it. The British Empire was based on it. Ours is the only empire I'm aware of that has kind of intentionally sowed chaos, and and I don't understand where that thinking comes from.
Leaving aside, the moral question is, is that right or wrong? It doesn't work for you. So why have we done it?
Speaker 1: You know, the Roman Empire is always a great story for us, and I compare the Ukraine war to the battle of the Teuttenberg forest, which is AD nine. Yep. And in AD nine, the Roman Empire reached its limits, on the Rhine. It never it tried to conquer the Germanic tribes, in September. They were defeated under Augustus.
And there were sporadic border things from then on, but they never tried again. They had hundreds of years where that just was wasn't their business. It was very, very smart. Hadrian, in the first, second century AD was the emperor at the maximum extent of the Roman Empire, and he basically wanted stability across the the the border lines. And this was the prudence of the empire.
It wasn't Alexander, you know, was very different three, four hundred years earlier. He wanted to conquer the whole world. There was no limit. Finally, his soldiers told him, if you go any further, we're killing you. We we've got to go home because they were already at the beyond the Indus River.
But the Romans said no. We're gonna put some boundaries, we're gonna keep the borders, and we're gonna not go beyond our means or our needs. I hope what happened yesterday was a a good example of that. What Trump and, Hegseth did yesterday, if they follow through, if the deep state doesn't undermine it, if it's some crazy thing doesn't happen, said, we don't need to be in Ukraine with NATO. We don't need to be.
It's for us, it's nothing. And it doesn't mean that Russia's now gonna invade Western Europe. That's crazy. This was a project going the other direction. So it's basic prudence, and that's what a great power should show, prudence.
Speaker 0: What are the chances that some you said unless the deep state doesn't make some crazy thing happens. I would note that for a good part of the presidential campaign, the deep state was telling the candidate Donald Trump that the state of Iran is trying to kill you, which as far as I know was totally untrue, by the way. But they were telling him that in order to prepare him to attack Iran, which they're still trying to do. So we know that this kind of deception is just a feature of it. How hard will people invested in the Ukraine war go?
Yeah. What to what lengths will they go to continue this, do you think?
Speaker 1: First of all, the the main job of The US President, of a of a successful US President, is to put the foot on the brake. This is if you look in history, the good presidents know when to stop. Eisenhower was such. Kennedy was such. Reagan understood this, and all our recent presidents did not up until now, basically.
Speaker 0: Well, troop Truman in Korea, George H W Bush in Kuwait. I mean, also true.
Speaker 1: No. That they fought too many wars in my Yeah.
Speaker 0: But they but they did stop.
Speaker 1: And No. But they stopped, but they, made too much Iraq Two Thousand Three. I mean, there were just too many too many wars. So the question is, can we learn, and can the president keep the foot on the brake? If he does, he will have a extremely successful administration.
He, I think, understands that all of Netanyahu's pleading and this has been thirty years also, this another project to go for The US to go to war with Iran is just the worst idea imaginable, would be a disaster. And so I think president Trump understands that. I think he understands that a war with China would be a complete disaster, which it would be, though there's a lot of war parties around on that. The funny thing about our time right now, not funny, the the the wonderful thing about our time right now is that we're in the midst of the biggest technological boom in the history of the world. So so many good things could happen in the next ten to twenty years.
President Trump has used the expression which I fully subscribe to, a golden age. We could have it. A golden age is not war. A golden age is investing in all this wonderful technology so that we can have health care that works, education systems that work, infrastructure that works. It would be nice if The United States even had one kilometer of fast rail, just saying.
China just completed its fifty thousandth kilometer of fast rail. We we don't have one. I can't even take the train reliably from, New York to actually from Washington to New York. Speaker 0: Tulsi Gabbard's right in the president's daily brief. Tulsi Gabbard is in charge of a lot of declassification efforts. Like, the whole thing is unbelievable. The only way to stop this is with a war. I mean, that's my kind of simple reading of it.

Speaker 1: I think that is exactly entirely the point. And if, and we had news today, please, inshallah, that, the ceasefire will continue on Saturday because more hostages will be released, more exchanges will take place, and there won't be a return. Really, If it happens and an outbreak of war is stopped, because it has to be stopped, this will be such a blessing, not only for this region, but I have to say for our country too, The United States.
Speaker 0: I agree.
Speaker 1: And so this is really the key moment, and I think Trump's instincts are there. And what he says, we didn't even hear Biden or other presidents say, president Trump said many times about Ukraine, too many people are dying. You didn't even hear those words. I mean, the idea that war involve by the way, maybe a million Ukrainians dead or seriously wounded. We're gonna find out in the next months because finally we'll see what reality is, not what the propaganda is, but it's horrible what's happened.
So that instinct is essential, and there are several places where everything could be derailed. This region is one of them. Ukraine is another. South China and East China Sea is is the third. And if the president gets it and has the basic idea we live together in respect with other countries, the golden age will come.
Speaker 0: I I think and I'd love your view of this. I think of all the amazing things I've seen in the last three and a half weeks, maybe the most amazing is the emergence of Steve Witkoff, who I I just I will say I know personally and and like enormously, but he was a real estate guy. K? All of a sudden, Trump appoints him an envoy sort of over and above massive stable diplomats. We have professional diplomats at the state department to go do, you know, effective ceasefire here in this region and then sends him over to Russia, and he winds up meeting Yeah.
With Putin apparently for several hours. And then all this stuff happens. You've been around diplomats your entire life. You've functioned as a diplomat. What do you think of
Speaker 1: that? Look. He did the single coolest thing since this administration started, I I have to say, which was, Trump made this cease fire. There's no question about it. Biden would never I mean, he didn't make the ceasefire because we don't know where Biden was mentally anyway, but his team was completely incompetent.
Horrible. I'm sorry to say it. It's very terrible.
Speaker 0: A lot of the rest of us did notice that.
Speaker 1: Yes. It it wasn't a completely it wasn't a completely closely held secret, let's say. So Trump said, we gotta have a ceasefire before my inauguration. And he sent Witkoff. And, Witkoff said to Netanyahu, I'm coming to meet you tomorrow.
And Netanyahu said, no. No. No. Tomorrow is Saturday. I can't meet you.
And Witkoff said, I'll be in your office tomorrow at one, and, told him, I don't care anything. I'm there. We're gonna have a a discussion. And out of that meeting came the ceasefire. Now the ceasefire looks maybe like it will hold this weekend.
Believe me, in Israel, they want war everywhere for a lot of reasons. But the president's job from my point of view of American interest and the world interest and this region's interest, everybody's interest. No more war. Stop this now. So if Witkoff can keep that track record, that would be the heroic success.
Speaker 0: But what does it tell you that Steve Witkoff, who I will say, again, I'm biased because I really like him, he's got a great personality, super energetic, very straightforward, believable, but zero training in any of this. Like, not he's a real estate guy. And he pulls this off? Like, what does that tell you about our professional diplomatic corps?
Speaker 1: I'll tell you one thing it it tells you. Trump can make peace if he wants to make peace. I mean, he needs he needs a capable guy that can go and read the riot act and say this is no joke, and we're gonna have it. And that is basically what good diplomacy is. And again, in The US system, of course, we've got the deep state who tell presidents what to do.
We've got lobbies. We've got all all sorts of things, but a president's true job is to lead. And if you don't have a president compasementus, like I think we didn't have in The United States, you get war breaking out everywhere like we had, in the last two years. Or if you have a president that is poorly directed or poorly, you know, really doesn't get it. And Clinton was an inconsequential president in my opinion because he is so easily swayed.
He lets he he just made so many lousy decisions. George Bush Junior listened to Cheney who was really a nonstop warmonger and so on. If a president gets the idea, I want peace because this war is really destructive of everything else I'm trying to do, then you can have peace, actually. It's possible. No one is gonna attack The United States, so peace depends on us.
No one is attacking us. China is not about to invade The United States. Russia's not gonna attack The United States. Mexico and Canada are not gonna attack The United States. Panama's not gonna attack The United States.
Greenland's not gonna attack The

Speaker 1: I'm sorry to make I don't wanna go the whole list, but I'm just confident about this. So if the president wants peace, he'll get it. If he gets peace, believe me, he'll get all the other things that he wants, like low inflation, being able to pass the budget that he wants, getting his tax policies that he wants. But if there's war, he ain't gonna get any of it. That's the basic point.
And, you know, I voted democratic in '9 in, 2020. I voted for Biden. And Biden I've had a lot of experience with governments over the last forty five years, so I watched them, and I I think I understand a lot of of them. And Biden, in the first days, said stupid things about foreign policy. The world is divided between this and this and blah blah blah.
And he's saying, oh my god. What is the guy is doesn't get it. And in fact, he didn't get it at all, and I told many democratic leaders when they still talk to me. Now if they don't talk to me and I don't talk to them, You're gonna you're gonna do something completely almost impossible in American politics, which is you're gonna lose on the basis of foreign policy because Americans don't vote on foreign policy. And I said, your foreign policy is so bad.
This is gonna bring you down. And in fact, the democrats lost their heads in this, and they were so intent on defeating Trump that no matter what Biden said, well, we have to back him up a % as he led them off to war and complicity in the war here and the Ukraine war and tensions with China and all the rest. And they created a milieu of so much unhappiness in The United States, Anxiety, higher inflation, big budget deficits, that the public said, no. We don't like this. This is so they did really the impossible.
Speaker 0: But they brought Liz Cheney over to the coalition.
Speaker 1: Yeah. Exactly. And then what's ironic is, you know, this wonderful person who was confirmed yesterday for, the, head of director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, who's really smart by the way, very honest, very meticulous. I know her extremely well over many, many years. Totally up and up, so I'm delighted she's gonna be briefing the president each day.
I couldn't think of a better person. All the democrats voted against her. This is crazy. She was their colleague for decades. She stood up for things that they should be applauding her for.
Every one of them voted against her.
Speaker 0: She was the vice chairman of the DNC Exactly. Seven eight years ago.
Speaker 1: Exactly.
Speaker 0: So, I guess the question is the opposition you've alluded to the deep state, but there's also the out in the open state. You know, the the congress, for example, the other party, the Democratic Party, does Trump's success, not just in the election, winning the popular vote, but in affecting peace, which is actually popular with people, does that change their views on foreign policy? Like, does he bring people with him, or does he stand alone between the two parties as he did in the first time?
Speaker 1: Look. This is very early days because we're just a little over three weeks into this. But if yesterday turns into policy, which it could, and the Ukraine war ends soon, which it could, You're gonna see everybody changing their views. Oh, I didn't support that. Peace is great.
The European leaders are gonna be saying the opposite of what they're saying right now. Look. In a hundred politicians, anyway, rethink, the rest line up somewhere tactically. So, yes, they will change their view. They'll complain about other things.
That's their job. They're in the opposition, but this war was a disastrous, stupid project that went awry, should have ended, makes no sense. And if Trump pulls it off as he can, if he's resolute now and clear minded and Witkoff does his work, because he'll be the one to do it, it looks like, and he does his work, then this won't be talked about or complained about. This will pass into history as just another one of those blunders. I mean, we don't talk about the two thousand three Iraq war or the twenty years waste in Afghanistan or so many Libya, so many completely ridiculous projects that America has been involved in for no conceivable reason other than these, weird game of risk ideas.
We gotta own that space on the board. Turns out the world and that game board are are rather different. But if Trump pulls this off, what he needs, I think, and what we need to understand is the American scene, it ain't great in general. The budget deficit is enormous. The fragility of society is is actually quite significant.
There is lots of depression, lots of violence, lots of problems that haven't been addressed for thirty years. Big, big budget deficit, huge, can't be solved with all due respect to Elon. It's not the budget deficit has very little to do with the size of the civil service. That's not where the budget deficit comes from. That's not where the spending comes from.
Spending comes from seven fifty overseas military bases, from wars, from massive outlays, of course on pensions, on health care, on interest payments, on the debt, and so forth. So war derails all of that. We're not with a buffer. We're not where the US dollar is king forever. It's almost the opposite, by the way, although it's not so clear to people.
But ten years from now, it's gonna be completely different international monetary scene from the one that we have now because the renminbi is gonna play a completely different role. And the way that international settlements will be done is completely different. You can if you watch like I do, you see all of the stitching together of a new system taking shape. So The US does not have this great room for maneuver, and it's all a game, and we can do this, and we can do that. The president needs to be really accurate right now, really accurate, and understand.
Also, not don't overplay the hand. The world's not desperately waiting to get into The US market as I think he thinks, that these tariffs give all this leverage. No. The US is not the big deal that maybe some people imagine right now. So we gotta get our act together, and you can't get your act together in war.
That's that's the bottom line.

Speaker 1: It's a big party. You'd think if you were stealing, you'd start small. They do start small. But then over what happens is over the years so generally, the fraud starts out small and they try to hide it. But then year after year, if nobody stops the fraud, it gets more and more brazen.
And and every year it gets bigger until they're literally renting out stadiums. I like in

Speaker 2: This is driving me crazy.

Speaker 2: When you find these things, do you guys get mad? You're like, yes. I got one. How does it how does it make you feel?
Speaker 0: It's so common.
Speaker 1: It's so common. I mean, you just get numb to it. Unfortunately, get like, the hundredth time you've heard it, you it's hard not to get a little numb. Yeah. You know?
But, like and by the two hundredth time, you're like, well, okay. It's just another day at the office.
Speaker 3: We checked, is the small business administration giving loans to dead people, people over the age of 20? Yeah. The answer was yes, and it was around $330,000,000 in total.
Speaker 1: So People with a birthday that could not possibly be real. Yeah. Meaning, they're they're over a hundred they're 15 years old or older. The oldest living American is 14. So it's safe to say if anybody is in the system as 115 years or older, that is fake.
Speaker 4: So just by sharing a database and looking at social security numbers, that showed that at the time of the loan, they had listed as over 15
Speaker 1: years old or actually 11. We didn't even check for 18. Babies and dead 11 years old. That's pretty clear. Babies and dead people who were getting loans.

Speaker 1: And also people with birth dates in the future.

Speaker 1: Well, in one case, I mean, I think the, like the birth date, birth date, I think in one case was like

Speaker 1: No, not even. No, really sort of like, you're talking about like your great grandchildren. Like with the birth date, like, I think it was like 02/1965. So more than a century from now was the birth date.

Speaker 1: Yes. Because your birthday is in the future, like the far like the far future, not like next year. Right. And we either this is either fraudulent or we have your birthday wrong. Right.

Speaker 5: One of the the extreme examples of non, accountability in some cases is has occurred at some of the small agencies. I think the Inter American Foundation, IAF, is one of the agencies we visited where, you know, they get $50,000,000 a year congressional money to give grants. These are things like, you know, alpaca farming in Peru, improving them That's
Speaker 1: a that's a real example.
Speaker 5: That's a real description. Improving the marketability of peas in Guatemala. Really? Fruit jam.
Speaker 6: And What? Yeah.
Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. So you might expect, you know, in the private sector, a nonprofit to give, you know, 80 to 90% of their money to grantees. In the case of IAF, that was 58%. So the other half goes towards management Oh, yeah.

Speaker 1: What what we find exactly I mean, as an example is is that even if you agreed with supporting alpaca farmers in Peru, well, actually most of the money never made it out of DC. Mhmm. It's going into the pockets of people in in the neighborhood.
Speaker 2: What percentage And then you get to Peru. Right. So what percentage do you think doesn't even get to the destination it's supposed to?
Speaker 1: I believe the GAO estimates, this is not our estimate. I believe it was on the order of only 10 to 15¢ and the dollar actually gets to the end recipient. Whether you agree with that cause or not.
Speaker 2: So they're just stealing the money before it even gets anywhere.
Speaker 1: There's layers of stealing. So there's like, there's the first layer of stealing, second layer of stealing, third layer of stealing. Subcontractor, subcontractor. Yeah. Exactly.
Contractor, subcontractor, subcontractor. It's like peeling an onion. And then maybe, and sometimes it's zero. Just flat, you get to the bottom of the onion. There's nothing there.
Speaker 2: So maybe no one got a sex change in Guatemala.
Speaker 1: It's possible that no one got a sex change in Guatemala.
Speaker 0: I overheard a contractor tell one of her colleagues to falsify billable hours by creating a PowerPoint to mask a delay in the onboarding process in front of me. And this is like hour zero at this agency. And so, I mean, this is just a common theme that you take a look at these contracts, you take a look at these grants, and it's veiled in noble rhetoric. You know, it's at the top level. It's like It sounds good.
Yeah. It sounds amazing. And then you actually just follow what is the what are the funds actually doing?
Speaker 1: Or send us a picture.
Speaker 0: Exactly. And
Speaker 1: The the send us a picture request is incredibly good at like, Pixar didn't happen. And then and then like and and it wouldn't be that hard to just frankly, they could search for for some fake pics on the Internet or get AI to generate the pics, but they don't even bother doing that.
Speaker 2: So you you caught them cold billing fraud?
Speaker 0: Oh, I caught them her advising her colleague to do this because it takes a few days to onboard. So that is being investigated right now.
Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, generally, like, like these programs, these grants are gonna be like along the lines of save the baby pandas. And it's like, well, of course, who wouldn't wanna save the baby pandas? And, you know, in some cases they've got a show panda, which they will try it out for special occasions. In a lot of cases, don't even have a show panda.
No panda. There's not even one panda because we asked for pictures and we don't even get one panda. And he's like, well, you gotta well, that's a lot of you know, what's a billion dollars get you? Does not even get you one panda?
Speaker 2: You really wanna see a baby panda?
Speaker 1: Yeah. That will like, you know, like the Ebola money. We're like, okay. Well, we agree with like, we shouldn't have Ebola. You know?
Where is the money going? Oh, it's going to Deloitte in DC. Like, what what is an accounting firm doing with Ebola money?
Speaker 2: What has been the biggest resistance? Is there one agency? Is there one department that when you guys walk in, they all start fighting you, start hiding
Speaker 1: Wait, who gonna talk? I'm sorry. But I guess you can answer that question. Sure. I mean, let's let's yes.
We've we've certainly had some battles. Battles? Yeah. Yeah. I mean Yeah.

Speaker 6: Yeah. So, Jesse, there's there's NAID. It's a small agency called the United States Institute of Peace. It's definitely the agency we had the most fight at. We actually went into the agency and found that they had loaded guns inside of their headquarters.
Institute for Peace. It's two for peace.
Speaker 1: I mean, any given company any given organizational name is gonna be kinda be the opposite of the title. Right.
Speaker 6: Yeah. Yeah. And so it was the by far the least peaceful agency that we've worked with Yeah. Ironically.
Speaker 1: Of
Speaker 6: course. Additionally, we found that they were spending money on things like private jets, and they even had a $130,000 contract with a former member of the Taliban. This is this is real. We don't encounter that at most agencies.
Speaker 2: Yeah. What was the money going to the Taliban for?
Speaker 6: So it was a contractor. They received a hundred and $30,000 for generic services. And to Elon's point, there was not actually a clear description of what the contractor services were for. But was it for opium? Unclear.
Speaker 1: Or weapons?
Speaker 6: Or nothing. Or or nothing. Or or abroad.
Speaker 1: Or, yeah, nothing. And and
Speaker 6: you naturally have to ask the question, how did we get here? Like, when the country was founded, there were only four agencies. Today, there are over 400. So there's been a 100 x increase in the number of agencies since the founding of the nation. And thanks to president Trump, he's now signed two executive orders to start to reduce the number of agencies in the government, and the institute of peace was one of them, which is why our team went in to try and understand what was going on.
And that's when we found all of the craziness like the weapons in their armory. We found the payments to the Taliban. Okay.
Speaker 2: Yeah.
Speaker 1: The the accountants here. Oh, yeah. So just try to hide hide the evidence.
Speaker 6: Right. So just a few hours after we got into their headquarters, we found that their chief accountant had actually deleted over a terabyte of accounting records from several So you'd have to ask the question, well, why would somebody do that? And the Doge team, fortunately, was able to recover that data with the help of a few great employees at the Institute of Peace. And I think the most troubling thing was they received $55,000,000 a year from congress and any money that went unspent instead of returning that to congress, they would sweep it into a private bank account, which had no congressional oversight and that's what they would use to fund things like events at their headquarters and the private jets. And so I think it's a great example because most most Americans don't know what's going on at a lot of these smaller agencies and this is a I think the most extreme case of some of the wasteful spend that we're finding.
Speaker 2: So the agencies are hiding money from you. They're sending it to the Taliban. They have loaded weapons in the department buildings.
Speaker 6: At the Institute of Peace.
Speaker 2: At the Institute of Peace. Yeah.
Speaker 6: That's right.
Speaker 2: So this is a cover up when you guys roll in?
Speaker 1: This one, yes, a cover up. Yes. It's a cover up. They did delete a vast amount of financial information. That's really a definition of a cover up.
Speaker 2: Isn't that illegal to delete evidence?
Speaker 1: Yes. Documents?
Speaker 6: It is. It's it's certainly illegal to delete accounting records that the that congress would certainly want to know where where the congressionally appropriate funds are going from from taxpayers.
Speaker 2: When you catch them going Hillary style on their computers, do you refer this to the Department of Justice?
Speaker 6: In this case, we did refer the evidence in the accounting example to the FBI and DOJ. We were proud to do that. So, yes, we did.
Speaker 3: Resistance has shown up in some very surprising places. So for example, the famous fork in the road email, the deferred resignation program. So this was a program where you could resign from the government, collect pay and benefits for the next eight months. Probably the most attractive separation program ever in human history. And the resistance actually came from the outside with people saying this is a trick.
And I've heard somebody refer to it as an apple with a razor blade. And, no, this was just a really juicy apple, caramel dipped apple. It it it was that good, but people were talked out of out of taking it. And now what started to happen is we did have about 80,000 people take it, and now those folks who did take it are on the beach or they've moved on to a new job and they're still getting paid. And so now we're starting to offer fork two and fork three where people can see that someone's eaten this apple and it was actually really tasty and good for them.
Speaker 2: Is Doze just getting started? Is this is a long term enterprise.
Speaker 1: It's a long term enterprise that because if if we take our eye off the ball, the waste and fraud will come roaring back.
Speaker 2: They can doge doge when democrats get back in power? Yeah.
Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I think some of the things that like, we're we're trying to have it be such that the the funding is is removed, so the grants gone. So there's it that if there's a lot of work required to restart the waste of fraud. And and that that will at least slow it down.

But I'm a step aside from that constructive criticism and instead answer your question.
Yep. And and I'm gonna be substantive here. President Trump, if he's the next president, for that matter, I think whoever the next conservative president is going to take on the power of the elites, which I've mentioned earlier. But there the the thing that I wanna drive home here, the very reason that I'm here at Davos is to explain to many people in this room and who are watching, with all due respect, nothing personal, but that's your part of the problem. Political elites tell the average people on three or four or five issues that the reality is x when in fact reality is y.
Take immigration. Elites tell us that open borders and even illegal immigration are okay. The average person tells us in The United States that both rob them of the American way of life. They're right. President Trump will take that on on behalf of the average American.

The average person will tell you that the lack of public safety damages not just the American way of life, but their life. President Trump will take that on.
